The Grant County Sheriff’s Office is searching for Thomas Kussmaul, 29, of rural Platteville, following a series of vehicle thefts and traffic complaints. Officials say he has connections to Crawford County and Prairie du Chien, among other area communities.

On Dec. 14, at about 12:30 a.m., the Grant County Sheriff’s Office investigated a report of a stolen 2003 Chevy Silverado from Southwest Road, south of Platteville. Approximately a half hour later, the vehicle was called in for a traffic complaint in the city of Platteville by several different individuals. The vehicle was squealing tires, running stop signs, and traveling in excessive speeds. Officers attempted to locate the vehicle but were unable to do so.

At 8 a.m., the stolen Chevy was recovered with disabling front end damages on Airport Road at the intersection of County D in Smelser Township. It was also discovered a second vehicle had been stolen from the same location. The rear window of a 2004 Ford Escape had been broken out while entry was gained into the vehicle. At around 5:30 p.m., officers located the stolen Ford behind Rippers Tavern in Belmont. Video footage from the dash camera that was in the stolen Chevy, as well as, video footage from throughout the city of Platteville, allowed deputies to identify the suspect.

The sheriff’s office is currently searching for Kussmaul. If anyone knows his whereabouts, please contact the Grant County Sheriff’s Office or Grant County Crime Stoppers. Do not approach Kussmaul. It is unknown if he is armed but he is considered dangerous. Kussmaul has possible ties to the Prairie du Chien, Boscobel, Blue River, Platteville, and Belmont areas. Kussmaul also has two valid statewide, body only warrants from Dane and Crawford Counties. Warrants from both counties are for possession of narcotics.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office was assisted in this matter by the Platteville Police Department, the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office, and the Wisconsin State Patrol.
