The Prairie du Chien High School girls basketball team continues to roll and has had one of the best starts to a season ever. The Lady Blackhawks are 16-0 as of Feb. 5, which is the third best start in program history and the third longest winning streak as well. Only the 17-0 start in the 1977-1978 season and a 21-0 start in 1982-1983 season are longer.

In addition, Prairie du Chien is ranked fourth in Division 3 by the Associated Press and fifth in the Coaches Poll. Prairie du Chien sports historian Derick Kelly says he believes this is the first time the team has been ranked in at least 20 years.

The Lady Hawks lead the Southwest Wisconsin Conference by one game with three remaining as they try to win at least a share of their first conference championship since the 1998-1999 season.

Coach Paula Shedivy said Prairie is also striving to make a long run in the tournament this season. The PdC girls team has made it to state twice in program history. In 1991, they defeated Pulaski and Ellsworth to win the Division 2 State Championship. In 2011, they fell to Altoona in the Division 3 state semifinals.

The Lady Hawks have made a stunning turnaround from just two years ago when they had a record of 1-22. They went 12-11 last year. Their 16-0 mark so far this season makes it not only the biggest turnaround in program history but one of the biggest turnarounds in any sport in Prairie du Chien High School athletic history.

“The girls have taken the initiative to get into the gym during the off-season to work on their game to get better,” said Shedivy regarding this season’s success. “The team first concept is evident with their unselfish play. We have shown that with different leading scorers during the season and the girls making the extra pass when needed.”

The team is relatively young, with several freshmen and sophomores on the roster. So, not only does this season hold a lot of potential, the next few years look to be very bright as well for Prairie du Chien High School girls basketball.
