Daniel J. Hawes, 83, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019, at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born Oct. 26, 1935, on the family farm in Harpers Ferry, Iowa, the son of Urban and Ruth (Farley) Hawes. 

He married Kathleen Kramer on Nov. 16, 1968, at Immaculate Conception Church in Wexford, Iowa. Daniel worked in road construction before taking over the family farm near Harpers Ferry, and then later went back into road construction working for F.C. Raemisch, in Waunakee, until his retirement. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 139 and was an avid hunter. He especially enjoyed coon hunting. 

Daniel is survived by his wife of 50 years, Kathy of Prairie du Chien; his sons, David (Resa) of Holmen, Terry (Robin) of Reedsburg, and Shawn (Emily) of Prairie du Chien; his sisters, Laurayne Schulte of Evansdale, Iowa, and Ruth Ann Cordova of Waterloo, Iowa; his grandchildren, Brittany, Jared, Tasha, Autumn, Ava, Bryanna, Jake, Steven and Logan; his great-grandchildren, Natalie, and twins who were born Feb. 17, 2019; Declan and Raleigh. 

Daniel was preceded in death by his parents.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, Feb. 22, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Church of the Holy Family Parish, Rev. Eugene Wolf officiating. A private family interment will be in the National Cemetery in Eastman. Friends may call at the Holy Family Parish Hall on Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of the Mass. The Garrity Funeral Home, of Prairie du Chien, is assisting the family.
