The City of Guttenberg's administrative assistant and payroll clerk, Debbie Eulberg, has retired after 25 years of dedicated service.

A gathering was held in her honor at the municipal building on Feb. 11. Eulberg has seen many changes throughout her years of employment.

The numerous computer upgrades in the office setting brought in a wave of time-saving technology with a few headaches attached. The learning process required by each new computer upgrade created an ever-changing learning experience.

Eulberg told The Press, "One of the first copy machines could only copy a page at a time on thermal paper that curled up as it came out. We now have copiers that can copy two sides, collate, staple, enlarge, reduce etc. — basically an extra pair of hands."

She went on to say with a smile, "I survived two major municipal building renovations — in 1997 and 2018. No one should work long enough to have to go through that!"

Duties for this organized assistant included: coordination of the safety program, Channel 6 operator, alcohol licenses, cigarette permits, solid waste licenses, and cemetery and marina duties. Securing grant monies for the purchase of AEDs for the police department, municipal building, Clayton Ridge Schools and the Guttenberg pool, and restructuring of city property files for greater research efficiency all added to her busy day.

Eulberg commented, "The city did not have a developed safety program. Early in her career, the then city manager asked if I would take on the safety program, which involved developing the safety program,  training, tracking drug and alcohol testing alliance programs, maintaining safety data sheets and the automated external defibrillator purchases, updates and maintenance."

Eulberg's love of swimming  was a good fit for her job duties with the swimming pool and its staff. Responsibilities for the start up, tracking throughout the season and closing at the end of the season were extra responsibilities she enjoyed.

Eulberg was the city liaison for the Wave of the Future campaign, and her duties for the project included: mass mailings, fundraiser posters, notices to The Press, tracking pledges and donations on various spreadsheets, thank you letters to generous donors and monthly pledge and donation information for publication in the local paper. She was also responsible for gathering information requested from the pool grant committee.

Eulberg had the opportunity to   work with five city managers and four mayors during her career.

Her working relationship with the late Julie Zittergruen brought this story to mind. "When Julie turned 40, Gail Rausch, Cindy Silberschlag and I decorated Julie's entire desk in black paper, streamers and balloons, put a rocking chair in place of her office chair, added a shawl to the rocker, grannie glasses, and gifts of prune juice, Depends, etc. We blew up a photo to an 11"x17" from her high school graduation and placed it all around the building doors and windows. The look on her face when she stepped into the office was priceless."

Zittergruen was Debbie's inspiration for her retirement decision, realizing that too often life can be cut short. When asked what she intends to do in her spare time during her retirement Eulberg said,  "I love going to the pool for water aerobics so I am excited for the completion of the new swimming pool. I enjoy walking, reading, crocheting, and hanging with my family and attending events of my nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Like everyone, health insurance costs will still be there so I intend to get a part-time job to help with those costs. I have a few scheduled events and I would like to travel more as time and money allow."
