Leonard Michael Check, 95, of Eastman, joined his heavenly family on Wednesday, April 10, 2019.

Leonard, the youngest of five siblings, was born Jan. 12, 1924, to Vincent and Genevieve (Swatek) Check, both of the Eastman area. As a 4-H youth, Leonard proudly showed his dad’s cattle at yearly county fairs. At the age of 10, he suffered a compound bone fracture leading to a bone infection and the lifelong, painful challenge of osteomyelitis. He did not allow this disability to prevent living a productive, fruitful life. Leonard attended the University of Wisconsin agricultural/business school, which translated to 35 years of productive farming and being a good steward of the land. Leonard maintained an active membership in Farm Bureau and Farm Service, serving in leadership roles as president, on the board of directors and being a delegate to several state and national conventions. He loved music and played trumpet and drums in area “dance bands” for a number of years. Being strong in faith, he was a lifelong member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church where he enjoyed singing in the choir. Leonard was an avid outdoorsman and found great pleasure fishing, hunting and especially chasing the elusive morel.

He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Clarence and Lawrence, sisters Adeline and Leone (Balk) and grandson Devin Thomas Gerlach.

Leonard leaves behind, to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 68 years, Laurayne (Shinko) Check; children, Ellen (Ken) Olson of Mendota Ill., Michael of Eastman, Gail (Greg) Vandermuse of Lakeland, Fla., and Kimberly (Thomas) Gerlach, of Fennimore; along with 10 grandchildren, Erik, Ryan, Andy, Andrea, Amy, Sandra, Stephanie, Katie, Ashley and Heather, 11 great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren, as well as nieces and a nephew.

Leonard was a man of strong character and believed in doing the right thing, he was always willing to help a neighbor or friend. He will be forever remembered for his sense of humor, generosity and being ready for a good game of euchre. A private mass of Christian burial and celebration of life will be held at a later date. Garrity Funeral Home is assisting with cremation wishes.
