Mathias D. “Matt” Schauf, 87, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Sunday, June 16, 2019, at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien. 

He was born March 3, 1932, in Sparta, the son of Leo and Mildred (Bowler) Schauf. 

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951-55 during the Korean Conflict. Matt was united in marriage with Irene Johnson and together they raised five children. 

He is survived by his wife Irene of Prairie du Chien; his children Steve (Patti), Sandi (Dick) Wachter both of Prairie du Chien, Denise (Carl) Shedivy of La Crosse, WI, Patty Schauf-Yager and Pam (Brad) Kiesau both of Prairie du Chien; his sister Alice Farley of Milwaukee, WI; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Patrick, a sister Rita Klinko and a granddaughter Ann.

He worked as an agent for Equitable Life Insurance for 40 years and was the company’s “Man of the Year” in 1972. Matt was also a charter member and past president of the PDC Country Club.  He was a proud member of the Prairie du Chien Honor Guard, Eagles Club, Jaycees, and St. John’s Parish.  Matt excelled in high school athletics and music in Bangor, WI.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, June 21, 2019 at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Church Of The Holy Family Parish, Rev. Paul Peters officiating, with burial in the Calvary Cemetery both in Prairie du Chien.  Military honors will be accorded by the Prairie du Chien Honor Guard.  Friends may call at the church on Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of services.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the charity of your choice. The Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien is assisting the family.
