Hazel S. Boom, 96, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Sunday, June 16, 2019, at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien.

Hazel, daughter of LeRoy and Vivian (Kramer) Schwenn, was born April 19, 1923, on a farm north of Madison, near Morrisonville, Columbia County.

Hazel graduated from West High School in Madison in June of 1941. After her graduation she moved to Eastman, and worked part-time at the telephone office. Hazel was united in marriage with Daniel Boom on Nov. 1, 1942. To this union, three children, Rodney, Roger and Esther were born.

Hazel started operating the Eastman telephone switchboard in April of 1948. After the telephone office closed in August of 1959, Dan and Hazel moved to Prairie du Chien where she started working in the telephone office. After the office closed in 1969, Hazel commuted to Dodgeville for six and a half years before retiring from the telephone company in 1975. She then worked at the Farrell Clinic until April of 1988.

Hazel’s main hobby was quilting. She made many, many quilts for her family and for church fundraisers. She also enjoyed her games of scrabble with Renee.

Hazel is survived by her sons, Rodney (Charlene) Boom of Prairie du Chien, and Roger (Ellen) Boom of Eastman; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Hazel was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Dan, who died in 2005; her beautiful daughter, Esther Kay Steiber Whitney, in 1993; her parents, LeRoy and Vivian; a sister, Viola Bartels; and a brother, Lee Schwenn.

Funeral services were held Thursday, June 20, at the Prairie du Chien United Methodist Church. Rev. Barb Cook and Rev. Lynn Schreck were the officiants. Internment was held in the Evergreen Cemetery, Prairie du Chien, following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Prairie du Chien United Methodist Church.

Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Prairie du Chien is assisting the family with arrangements.
