Start the support at Culver’s Share night July 30

By Correne Martin

Oct. 5 will be Crawford County’s inaugural Alzheimer’s Walk. The event on St. Feriole Island in Prairie du Chien starts with an 8 a.m. registration and 9 a.m. walk/run.

The hope is for the community to step forward to help raise awareness and start a foundation for continued dementia care services locally, said Heather Moore, dementia outreach specialist with the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin. All funds raised will stay within the county for services such as respite, care education consultations and other in-home supportive services.

The Alzheimer’s and Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin is already here, providing assistance to as many possible sufferers and their families of the 435 people in Crawford County estimated to be living with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.

But the first Alzheimer’s Walk is an opportunity to do better.

In advance of the walk, a Culver’s Share night is planned this coming Tuesday, July 30, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Prairie du Chien Culver’s Restaurant. Franchise owners, Jason, Jen and Justin Cathman will issue the Alzheimer’s Walk a donation check for a percentage of the sales raised that evening.

“Walk committee members will also be there that night to help people sign up,” Moore said.

Additionally, an enlarged photograph of the Mt. Hope tree has been donated by Scott Boylen, and people are invited to have their loved one’s name written in the sky of the picture for a $10 donation. When completed, Moore noted, the piece will be rotated around to different public locations in Crawford County.

A second fundraiser for the walk, offered by Lynda Coon and her business, Yes, I Can Paint, will be held Sept. 7, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Seneca Town Hall. Painters of all skills are invited to create their own colorful version of the Mt. Hope tree. Registration is open through Aug. 30 for this activity. Go to www.facebook.com/events/700109613758946, text Coon at (608) 412-3020 or email LyndaCoonArt@gmail.com

“Fifty percent of the proceeds from each registered painter will go toward the walk,” Moore said.

In the meantime, walkers and runners are encouraged to go online to Alzwisc.org and register a group or individuals for the Oct. 5 event. Click on the Step Forward Give Hope logo and then find Crawford County to join a team or make a donation.

There is no registration fee to enter but anyone wanting a T-shirt is asked to make a $25 donation.

“You can also be a virtual walker if you can’t make it that day but still wish to contribute,” Moore added.

On Oct. 4, from 4 to 6 p.m., a special time for pre-registration will be held at Hoffman Hall. Otherwise, participants may do so at 8 a.m. Oct. 5.

The honorary chairs/speakers at the Crawford County Alzheimer’s Walk will be Drs. Mark and Ann Grunwald. They will give the welcome at 8:45 a.m. the day of the event.

Following the walk/run, a 10 a.m. awards ceremony will take place. Recognition for the teams with the most walkers, the greatest fundraising team, etc. will be presented.
