Rep. Ron Kind (D-WI) held a town hall meeting Aug. 21 at the Crawford County Administration Building in Prairie du Chien.

Rep. Kind opened the meeting by discussing his priorities for the 116th Congress which included lowering healthcare costs for Wisconsin seniors, families and individuals, resolving the crisis facing Wisconsin’s family farmers, rebuilding Wisconsin’s aging infrastructure, reauthorizing the Higher Education Act and recommitting to a strong sense of fiscal responsibility answered a variety of questions from local citizens that ranged from immigration, conservation, gun control, global warming, impeaching President Trump and healthcare.

The discussion of healthcare became tense when one citizen pressed Kind on moving towards a single-payer system and abolishing private health care. Kind said he was “just not ready to move towards a single-payer system.” He added he had both political and logistical concerns that he wanted to ensure were addressed before moving forward to a single-payer system.

Earlier in the day, Kind also met with Prairie du Chien Mayor Dave Hemmer and Executive Director of Driftless Development Jim Bowman about Kind’s introduced bipartisan bill that will seek to reestablish a reporting framework for investments made in Opportunity Zones across the country. The Opportunity Zone program was based on Rep. Kind’s 2017 Investing in Opportunity Act, a bipartisan bill creating an incentive for entrepreneurs and businesses to invest in economically distressed communities.

Kind felt his visit to Prairie du Chien went well and he was glad to touch base with the community and to hear their concerns.

“I felt today’s meeting went very well and was productive. It’s good to get out in the community and hear the voter’s concerns. Sadly, a lot of other representatives do not make themselves as available to the public as they should,” he said.
