The Prairie du Chien boys soccer team opened their home season Thursday night with two exciting and closely matched contests with the Golden Eagles of Mauston.

The varsity took the field first in what would prove to be a battle of defenses.

Prairie’s defensive back line; Joey Gourdin, Jack Peterson, Ben La Haie and Jarrett Semanko aided by Josh Dyer at center defensive mid and a rotation by Brandon Hanger, Jonah Hornseth and Creighton Groom held Mauston scoreless despite a relentless attack by the Golden Eagles the last 10 minutes of the match.

Ryan Thein had 12 saves in the second half, and five in the first. Offensively, Caleb Brainard, Jayce Sexton and Aiden Toberman at forward and Landon Kohler, Ramon Gonzalez, and Jayce Sexton at middle field, with Noah Blackburn and Logan Higgins in relief, combined for 12 nice shots and three corners, but couldn’t garner the score, resulting in a 0-0 tie.

The varsity reserve match was equally close and exciting with increased offensive success.

Mauston scored twice in the first half to take a 2-0 lead into the break.

Jayce Sexton leveled the score at 2-2, scoring in the second and 12th minutes of the second half.

Mauston took the lead again with 5 minutes left in the contest.

The Blackhawks increased their attack and, with only 18 seconds left, Hunter Keene broke through, driving in the tying goal. The match ended 3-3.

Justice Olmstead and Logan Higgins had 3 saves each in the match.

Prairie returns to the Bluff View Pitch next Thursday when they host River Valley in a Parents’ Night conference battle. The varsity match kicks off at 5 p.m. with the varsity reserve to follow.
