Editor’s note: This is the final part of a three-part series about upcoming recreational offerings in Prairie du Chien.

By Correne Martin

Prairie du Chien’s got it when it comes to fall and winter events, especially family-friendly and tourist attracting opportunities.

It’s hard to believe Halloween is around the corner, but the annual Halls of Terror, hosted by Scream Extreme at the Cedar Building on St. Feriole Island, will start on Friday, Oct. 11. It will be held every Friday and Saturday thereafter from 7 to 10:30 p.m. On Sunday, Oct. 27, from 1 to 3 p.m., there will be a kid-friendly haunt. Prior to that, there will be a kids costume contest at noon.

An Alzheimer’s Walk 2019 one-mile walk and run is slated for Saturday, Oct. 5, at 9 a.m., on St. Feriole Island. Register, participate in a silent auction and have some snacks before the event, starting at 8 a.m. Afterward, there will be an awards ceremony as well. All funds will stay in Crawford County for the benefit of dementia resources and outreach.

The largest local event of the fall is Oktoberfest, which grows larger every year. On Saturday, Oct. 19, in the St. Feriole Island Memorial Gardens, all ages are “wilkommen” to enjoy authentic German food and beer, music, activities and more. A parade kicks off the fun at 10 a.m. downtown. Then, live music follows all day, along with kids activities, fisch races, bingo, euchre, hammerschlagen stein holding, a lederhosen 5K, a strolling button box, disc golf tournament, and a rolling bar.

Another highly anticipated event is the Holiday Gift and Craft Fair held Saturday, Nov. 23, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hoffman Hall. Each year, holiday sights, smells and sounds transform the hall into a great destination for finding that perfect gift for that special someone. Music and entertainment happen throughout the day.

In November, the annual Turkey Trot 5K Fun Run and Walk is an additional activity for the whole family. Bring canned goods to donate to the local food pantry. Come to Hoffman Hall on Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 28. The race begins at 8 a.m., and registration is prior.

Carpfest follows in December, wrapping up 2019 with a bang. This festival is Dec. 27 through Jan. 1, and includes the famous Dropping of the Carp Dec. 31—on a small scale indoors as opposed to its previous format outside in below zero temperatures. Other leisure will include bowling, arts and crafts, pool activities, youth games, a coloring contest and an associated Rotary Club brunch in town.

In the spring, there’s a second craft fair and flea market on Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is always an excellent opportunity for vendors to sell their items to hundreds who attend this annual event. This also occurs at Hoffman Hall.

Finally, the Shamrock Shuffle Fun Run 5K, on Saturday, March 14, at 8 a.m., will get people moving prior to the community-wide Irish celebration. Don your best green and Irish gear and get shuffling as a continued fundraiser for the Hoffman Hall Improvement Fund. Again, participants are invited to bring along canned goods to donate to the food pantry.
