The Crawford County Highway Committee discussed the progress of the bridge rehabilitation project on County S during its meeting Thursday morning.

The rehabilitation is for the bridge across the Kickapoo River. The bridge was built in the 1950s and will be receiving a new deck. The cost of this project is $756,000 and is an 80-20 split with 80 percent of the cost paid for by federal and state funds and 20 percent by the county.

Concrete Structures of Janesville is the general contractor for the project, which is expected to be completed by early November.

The committee also discussed damages to county roadways caused by the heavy rain and flash flooding of Sept. 12. Highway Commissioner Kyle Kozelka said the total damage estimate hasn’t been finalized yet. It was noted that the town of Wauzeka received the most damage.

Todd Myers of the Highway Department said there are pilings at the Gordon’s Bay Boat Landing that are severely bent and need to be removed because they are a hazard. The pilings were damaged by chunks of ice this past spring. The Highway Department is looking into options for removing the pilings, including the possibility of hiring a private contractor, because the department doesn’t have the equipment to remove the pilings. They are also waiting for the river to go back down. The county leases the landing from the Wisconsin DNR, but the lease agreement will soon expire.

The Vineyard Road Project of 2016/hospital lawsuit was discussed briefly. Committee Chairman Tom Cornford said the town of Bridgeport, Crossing Rivers Health Medical Center and other parties involved in the suit have been in mediation and have come to an agreement. The county, however, has not been contacted. The highway committee will discuss the matter again when it becomes pertinent. Crawford County and the Highway Department are two of the 10 defendants in the lawsuit filed by Crossing Rivers Health over a growing “pond” of standing water on hospital property.
