Excellent season ends for River Ridge girls
The River Ridge volleyball team made the trek up to Dodgeland High School in Juneau on Saturday night to take on the Waterloo Pirates. The Pirates were ranked second in the Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association poll and they were a number one seed. River Ridge was the number 3 seed but had taken out Wisconsin Heights, a number 2, and Brodhead, a number 1 seed. The Lady Timberwolves were ranked ninth in the WVCA poll.
“We were very excited to be one of the last 8 teams still playing in the WIAA tournament,” said River Ridge Coach Dianne Langmeier. “We knew this was going to be a very tough match for us. They have Brooke Mosher, a junior, that has already been signed with the University of Illinois after she graduates. They (the Pirates) not only had her but some other very tall and athletic girls who could really put the ball down. They also were very scrappy.”
The River Ridge girls lost the first set 25-19. River Ridge won the second set 25-17. Waterloo missed a lot of serves in the first two sets. They also hit a lot of balls out of bounds in the second set. In the third set, Waterloo came out really focused and got the ball to Brooke Mosher. The Lady Timberwolves could not get a block on her and her spikes were so hard, River Ridge couldn’t hardly get underneath them at all. In the last two sets, Waterloo really picked up their serving game, as well. They didn’t miss as many, and River Ridge struggled a few times getting up their float serves. River Ridge lost the last two sets by scores of 25-14 and 25-15.
“I was very proud of how the girls never gave up, and we had some great volleys with Waterloo right to the last point,” said Langmeier. “They are an outstanding team. Our girls had them shaken up a bit in that second set. The girls and coaches would like to thank everybody for the amazing support throughout the year. Some of these seniors have been a part of three conference championships, two regional championships, a trip to State in D4 last year, and now a trip to the sectional final game in D3. The seniors have definitely left their mark and will really be missed.”
River Ridge finished its fine season with a 23-1 record.
