Local events for Veterans Day

The Crawford County Veterans Service Office has announced local events in observance of Veterans Day. All are invited to attend.

On Saturday, Nov. 9, a flag raising will take place at Cabela’s in Prairie du Chien at 9 a.m. For veterans, free coffee and doughnuts will be offered from 9 to 10 a.m., followed by free hot dogs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

On Sunday, Nov. 10, the Prairie du Chien St. John’s Church mass will be held in honor of local veterans and emergency personnel. At 11 a.m., there will be a luncheon with brats and hot dogs in the church hall, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. This is open to veterans and their spouses. 

When Veterans Day arrives, Monday, Nov. 11, there will be several programs to recognize this special day. At 8:15 a.m., Bluff View School will begin its program. Then, at 10 a.m., the Prairie du Chien High School will host its program. At 2 p.m., Prairie Catholic School will start its program. At 3 p.m., Prairie Maison will be open for a special recognition of veterans. 

Rounding out the day, Crawford County’s official public Veterans Day program is planned at the Prairie du Chien High School theater, at 7 p.m., sponsored by American Legion Post 68. 

Outside the county

In Grant County, Bagley is planning a Veterans Day supper on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 6 p.m. at its Community Building. Reservations are required by calling (608) 996-2575.

In northeast Iowa, the public is welcome to attend the annual Veterans Day program at the MFL MarMac High School auditorium, in Monona, at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 11. Veterans and their families are invited to come early for coffee and cinnamon rolls in the lobby. The event will also include a Quilts of Valor presentation.

Free treat

The Courier Press reached out via its Facebook page to gather information about the area’s free public offerings for veterans in honor of Veterans Day. Below are from those who contacted us.

•On Friday, Nov. 8, Associated Bank in Prairie du Chien will be serving cookies, cupcakes and lemonade in honor of veterans. Pictures, uniforms and memorabilia of past, present and future veterans will also be on display.

BD’s Eagles Nest in Fennimore is hosting a Salute to Veterans Brunch from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 10. All veterans eat free with a military ID. There will also be raffles and a 50/50 drawing with proceeds going to the local American Legion and other military charities.

•A free Blizzard treat is being offered to all veterans on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, at the Dairy Queen in Prairie du Chien. 

•Dunkin’ Donuts in Prairie will give away one free doughnut to all currently active military and all veterans.

•All three congregate senior meal sites in Crawford County are offering a free meal to senior veterans 60 or better in age. Preregistration is required by calling 326-0235.

•The Senior Saints group at Bible Baptist Church is having a Veterans Day luncheon at the church’s north facility on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. All veterans and spouses are welcome to be recognized and enjoy a free lunch.
