Cary O. Turner, 61, of Onalaska, formerly of Prairie du Chien, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, Jan. 31, 2020, in Janesville.

He was born on July 15, 1958, in Boscobel, the son of Richard and Madonna (Hill) Turner.

Cary was united in marriage to Laurie Conner on Aug. 25, 1986, in Las Vegas, Nev. Cary graduated from Iowa-Grant High School, then attended Southwest Tech in Fennimore, where he obtained his auto body degree. In 1980, after working at several body shops, he started working at Dagnon Motors in Prairie du Chien, where he managed the body shop. In 1988, he started Midwest Auto and successfully operated it for 30 years.

Always willing for new adventures, he got involved in owning and operating hotels. Cary and Laurie began by purchasing the Best Western & Super 8 in Prairie du Chien, which soon expanded to Microtel, Comfort Inn and AmericInn, with locations in La Crosse, Janesville, and Rochester, Minn. Cary was very proud of his accomplishments with Laurie and his children by his side throughout. He also had a wonderful heart and always treated his employees with great respect.

Cary was a very kind, generous man and a kid at heart with a great sense of humor. He enjoyed cars, football and cheering on the Packer, and he had a passion for animals, especially his dogs. Cary’s devotion to his family and friends will be cherished forever.

Cary is survived by his wife, Laurie of Onalaska; three children, Brande Turner of Prairie du Chien, Brian Turner of La Crosse, Jamie Turner of La Crosse; two grandchildren, Orion and Sebastien; brother, Rick Turner of Mineral Point; sister, Julie Ann Turner of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; his brother and sisters-in-law, Johanne Bymaster, Sue Hollander, Mary Towsley, Paul (Robin) Conner, June (Tom) Hlavac, Threasa (Bruce) Ramsden, Eugene (Sue) Conner, Carolyn Reger, and Jerry Hlavac; along with many nieces and nephews; and his dear friends, Del Carey of Mineral Point, Karl Anderson of Janesville, and David “Chuck” Gundlach of Montfort.
