Clayton County residents joined others across the state on Monday, Feb. 3, as they met at caucus sites to support their favorite candidates for the upcoming presidential election in November.

Voters from approximately 1,700 Iowa precincts selected delegates to their respective county conventions. The 99 county conventions will then choose delegates for state party conventions, that will in turn designate delegates who will head to national conventions later this year.

The nation’s eyes were turned to Iowa’s results, traditionally a harbinger of national voting trends. There was a lengthy delay in reporting of results by the Iowa Democratic Party, which party officials said was caused by a new app that was meant to improve reporting but in fact caused delays of several days before results were released.

Republican caucus-goers across the state gave overwhelming support to President Donald Trump, who tallied 97.1% of the vote. Two challengers, Bill Weld and Joe Walsh, garnered only 1.2% and 1.1% of the vote respectively.

When statewide Democratic results were finally announced, Pete Buttigieg and Bernie Sanders finished in a near tie, with Buttigieg at 26.2% and Sanders at 26.1%. Trailing were Elizabeth Warren with 18%, Joe Biden 15.8% and Amy Klobuchar 12.3%. As of Feb. 10, calls for a re-canvass were in the news. 

Clayton County results

Clayton County Republicans reflected the state trend, giving President Trump 97.3% of the vote. Republicans Bill Weld and Joe Walsh each had 1.4% of the total.

Democrats in the county gave a wider margins of support to Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar than did Iowans statewide. Buttigieg garnered 38.3% of county votes, and Klobuchar was second with 23.3%. Bernie Sanders finished with 18.3%, Joe Biden 16.7% and Elizabeth Warren  3.3%. 

In addition to selecting delegates and alternates, other business discussed at caucus night included adoption of proposed resolutions to add to county platforms and the election of precinct representatives to the county central committee.
