On Feb. 13, at 11:21 p.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a one-vehicle traffic crash on Plum Creek Road near Shanghai Ridge Road in the township of Wauzeka.

A 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by Mckenzie Olson, 16, Wauzeka, was southbound on Plum Creek Road, when she lost control due to ice and road conditions. The car got close to the right shoulder of the roadway and was over-corrected back into its lane. It slid sideways in the roadway and crossed the center line. The vehicle went off the east side of the road sideways and went airborne 20 yards. It partially struck a tree before the front end hit the ground.

The vehicle also traveled a long distance down the hill and came to rest on its wheels in Plum Creek. Olson was able to exit the car and get out of the water. She then made her way back up the hill and walked about a mile to a residence for help. At the time of the crash, the temperature was about -120F and the car was in roughly 3 feet of water.

Assisting on scene were Eastman Fire and First Responders, Tri State EMS, Fry’s Towing and Milo’s Towing.

The car was totaled. Olson had minor injuries and was evaluated for hypothermia. She was transported to Crossing Rivers Health.

The crash remains under investigation.
