A disabled man, who was lost and distressed, was rescued from the woods behind Bluff View Intermediate School Thursday, Feb. 27, according to the Prairie du Chien Police Department.

At 12:55 p.m., the police department responded to a report of a 47-year-old intellectually disabled man who had left his home and was suspected of being lost while hiking the bluffs. Information was received that the man was possibly experiencing emotional distress.

Law enforcement personnel made phone contact with the man, but communication was difficult due to his clear exhaustion and difficulty breathing. Authorities learned the man suffers from severe asthma.

Through the phone calls, the police department confirmed he had been hiking in the bluffs. Once he dialed 911, GPS technology narrowed the scope of the search to directly behind Bluff View School.

The Prairie du Chien Fire Department and Tri-State EMS were paged and staged at the school while police personnel searched the bluffs. Around 4:30 p.m., the man was located several hundred yards into the woods, in severe respiratory distress and suffering from hypothermia. Police, fire and EMS personnel removed him from the woods, and he was taken to Crossing Rivers Health for medical care.

“This is another example of interoperability between emergency services, making the difference in the life of a local resident,” Chief of Police Kyle Teynor said. “From the outstanding work done by Crawford County Dispatch to the selfless response by a volunteer fire department, the dedication of our public servants cannot be overstated.”
