Many Prairie du Chien area shoppers stocking up on cleaning products

Wisconsin health officials recently recommended that citizens stock up on food, water and medicine, and have a family plan of action regarding the coronavirus.

While many people contend the threat of coronavirus has been overblown by government officials, television and other media, the behavior of shoppers, even in small cities such as Prairie du Chien, has been affected.

Prairie du Chien Walmart Store Manager Tanya Kangas said that within the past week or so, people have been stocking up on cleaning products with high alcohol concentrations, bleach, hand sanitizers and wipes, and toilet paper. She said there hasn’t been a significant increase in purchases of food and medicine, however.

“People have been stocking up,” said Kangas. “It’s happening everywhere.”

On Monday, there were a few bare spots on the shelves at Walmart in the cleaning product section. Kangas said ordering more such products has been blocked temporarily in order to ensure an even distribution in all stores throughout the United States.
