The Wauzeka-Steuben School District referendum was approved overwhelmingly by voters, 394-174.

Out of 568 total voters, the village of Wauzeka brought in the most votes toward the decision, with 211 in favor and just 33 opposed. Steuben voters were 31-9 in favor. Wauzeka and Marietta townships were also supportive of the referendum, as  residents voted 96-48 in Wauzeka and 26-10 in Marietta. However, there were more votes in opposition in the townships of Bridgeport (9-15), Eastman (21-51), Haney (0-6) and Prairie du Chien (0-2).

With the referendum passing, the electorate essentially gives the district authorization to exceed revenue caps. This means the district will have the funds to sustain current operations for the coming three years. It also means the district won’t have to make hard cuts to staffing, programming or facility maintenance during that time. The yes vote locks in the 2018-19 tax rate of $12.71 per thousand for each of the next three years.

Also in the district, there were three individuals running for two school board seats. Incumbent Jessie Bird and newcomer Ken Buck won those seats, with 452 votes and 256 votes, respectively. Incumbent Tom Jazdzewski lost his seat by just one vote to Buck, netting 255 votes.
