Guttenberg's traditional Memorial Day program featuring a parade, band music and speakers will not be held this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Dennis Hanna of the local American Legion Post, which coordinates the event, said that although the program was cancelled, organizers want to honor all veterans with a brief acknowledgement of their service and sacrifice on Monday, May 25.
"A 21-gun salute will be fired at 10 a.m. at the Guttenberg Area Veterans Memorial in Inglside Park," said Hanna. "The salute will be followed by the playing of 'Taps.’" Those taking part will practice social distancing.
The public is invited to observe the ceremony from the safety of their cars. "The event will be very brief," said Hanna. "Please stay in your cars."
