Many Prairie du Chien residents may have noticed that several trees were cut down along one side of Lochner Park.

No worries, the trees will be replaced soon. Parks and Recreation Director Mike Ulrich said the trees were removed because they were infected with emerald ash borer.

Ulrich also said several other trees around town were damaged due to flood and wind and will be replaced. In addition, trees will be planted at the Old Rock School in order to beautify the site.

“When a tree falls down, it’s our goal to replace it,” said Ulrich, who noted the city is also being proactive in its approach to provide trees in the parks for everyone to enjoy.

Ulrich said the city received a $2,000 grant from the American Transmission Company to plant 35 trees in the city. Planting is expected to begin next week. “We are hoping for more in the fall,” he said. The total cost of the project is $4,478.12.

Lochner Park will have nine trees planted, including five autumn blaze and four Tilia Americana “Boulevard” Linden.

St. Feriole Island will get eight trees. Two will be on the northeast corner of Brisbois and Fourth streets, and six will be on the west side of Sixth Street between Brisbois and Bolvin streets. The trees will include a hackberry, a bur oak, three autumn blaze and three Acer Rubrum “Sun Valley” Maple.

Lawler Park on St. Feriole Island will get four trees. Three will be south of the south gazebo and one will be north of the north gazebo. They will consist of a Minnesota strain redbud, a bur oak, a hackberry and an autumn blaze.

Washington Street Park will get a hackberry by the corner of the parking lot.

The Old Rock School will get three hackberry, three Tilia Linden, and three Acer Rubrum Maple. The trees will be located on the east and south side of the park.

For educational purposes, Tom Nelson will plant a sugar maple, a European mountain ash, an iron wood and a pine oak on his own. City staff took down trees in the city that needed to be replaced. Nelson True Value has been contracted to plant the trees.

“The trees will be a benefit for everyone in the community,” said Ulrich.
