The Clayton County Agricultural Society has postponed the 2020 Clayton County Fair until 2021.

In a statement released earlier this week, the Clayton County Agricultural Society said it has discussed over the past month how to safely host the 166th annual Clayton County Fair amid the uncertainty of COVID-19.

“We have received guidance from our state and city officials along with the Clayton County Board of Health. The society has also spent time consulting with the Association of Iowa Fairs and the International Association of Fairs and Expositions. All of these organizations and associations have given us insight and fair industry perspectives,” the statement read. “Due to the guidance received and unanimous vote by the Clayton County Agricultural Society, it has been decided that the 2020 annual Clayton County Fair will be postponed until Aug. 4-8, 2021. As we were hopeful to proceed with planning this year, the decision was based on the safety and health of our community with the information provided to us today.”

Even though Clayton County and the fair cannot be celebrated as has been done in the past, the Clayton County Agricultural Society is exploring alternative options for 4-H/FFA exhibitors in both livestock and static project areas.

“We are working with the Clayton County Extension Office and Clayton County Extension Council to provide the best and safest opportunities for our youth based on CDC and health guidelines,” the society said. “Additional information will be available once this decision is made.”

Any questions related to 4-H/FFA can be directed to the Clayton County Extension Office at (563) 245-1451.

All other activities and contests normally held during fair, including concerts, the Clayton County Bull Bash, mutton busting, tractor pull, demo derby, kiddie tractor pull, kiddie calf show (beef and dairy), little piglet show, BBQ, Clayton County Fair royalty contest, open class exhibitors, commercial and food vendors, have been postponed until 2021.

The Clayton County Agricultural Society is appreciative of the public’s continued support.

“The fair would not be what is today without the support of the county and surrounding communities. We appreciate your understanding of our decision for 2020,” the release stated.
