The MFL MarMac baseball team continued its hot start to the season last week, sweeping North Fayette Valley and taking one of two games against Turkey Valley.

In the first game against NFV on June 24, the Bulldogs won 4-2 after scoring in each of the first four innings. The TigerHawks crossed the plate in both the sixth and seventh, but couldn’t close the gap.

Left fielder Karter Decker was 2-3 in the game with an RBI. Chaise Ziegler was also 2-3, while Ethan Stubbs singled and drove in a run. Max Havlicek, who did not have a hit in the game but was hit by a pitch, walked and stole three bases, scored two of the team’s runs.

Havlicek pitched two and two-third no-hit innings for the Bulldogs. Freshman Kaden Stocker took the mound for four and one-third innings, allowing just three hits and two earned runs. He struck out eight TigerHawk batters.

The Bulldogs really busted out the bats in the second game of the doubleheader, defeating NFV 15-3. The TigerHawks cut a 6-0 MFL MarMac lead in half with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Bulldogs responded with a six-run sixth and three more in the seventh to seal the victory.

Ziegler had another big game, going 3-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Stubbs, too, was 3-4, drove in a run and scored twice. He stole a team-leading four bases. JT Stocker’s stat line included two hits, three RBIs and a run scored, while Decker added two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Kaleb Tilson singled and drove in two runs.

The Bulldog offense continued to roll June 25, in an 11-1 game-one victory over visiting Turkey Valley. MFL MarMac did much of the damage in the second and fifth innings, scoring four and six runs, respectively, thanks to timely hits and stolen bases as well as some Trojan pitching and defensive miscues.

JT Stocker had two of those hits along with an RBI. Decker singled, drove in a run and scored twice. Havlicek had a two-run double and crossed the plate once himself, and Stubbs finished the game 2-4 with two runs scored.

Stubbs was also dominant on the mound, surrendering just four hits and one earned run over six innings. He compiled eight strikeouts.

In game two, it was the Bulldog pitching and defense that faltered, as Turkey Valley won 21-6. Although MFL MarMac took a 2-0 lead after the first inning, the Trojans scored three or more runs in each inning after that.

Cedrick Drahn led the Bulldog offense with two hits, an RBI and run scored. Stocker and Bryce Radloff each singled and drove in a run.

The Bulldogs are now 6-2 overall and 5-1 in conference play. They’ll start this week with a key conference doubleheader against undefeated South Winneshiek on Monday, June 29, followed by one game with NFV on Tuesday, June 30. The week will conclude with non-conference opponent East Buchanan on Wednesday, July 1.
