Mary Jane (Head) Brackin, 69, passed away on Friday, June 26, 2020. 

She was born on Sept. 2, 1950, to Martin and Emma (Hutter) Head in Prairie du Chien. She graduated from Seneca High School in 1968. She worked as a hairdresser, then became the first female police officer in Calhoun County and Lohrville, Iowa, from 1975-1977. She enjoyed ceramics, painting and bird watching.

George Anthony “Tony” Somsky, 72, passed away on Friday, June 26, 2020.

He was born on April 22, 1948, to George and Josephine (Kanniainen) Somsky. He graduated from Assumption Catholic School in 1966. He was drafted into the United States Army from February 1968 to December 1969. He worked at Granger Locker for 18 years, then owned Tony’s Grocery in Granger, Iowa, from 1984-1989. He enjoyed woodworking. 

Tony and Mary’s life together began in 1994 when they blended their families. They especially enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren. Tony and Mary died in Des Moines, Iowa, on June 26, 2020, within hours of each other due to the coronavirus.

They are survived by Mary’s daughters, Michelle (Lawrence) Vaughn of Lake City, Mary (Jonathan) Tiernan of Pocahontas, Melissa Kruse of Spencer and Julie Brackin (Donny Kraft, Jr.) of Lohrville; Tony’s son, Jason (Kristy) Somsky of Des Moines; Tony’s daughter, Melody (Dale) Everhart of Lohrville; 17 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; Mary’s brother, Roger (Jeanette) Head of Verona; sister-in-law, Delma Head of Whitewater; and Tony’s sister, Kathy (Tom) Gill of Colorado. 

They were preceded in death by their parents; Mary’s brothers, Raymond and James Head; and Tony’s brother, Donald Somsky. 

Graveside services, including Military Honors for Tony, were held at St. Joseph Cemetery, Lohrville, on Friday, July 3, 2020.
