Edward F. Gilkes, of Prairie du Chien, passed away on Saturday, July 25, 2020, at the age of 84.

Ed was born in Bagley, on June 15, 1936, the son of Charles and Lula (Yost) Gilkes. He graduated from Bagley High School in 1955. He proudly served in the United States High Army. After serving, he worked at the GMC plant in Janesville. Ed met Dorothy Dagnon at the Checkerboard and they were married on Jan. 7, 1961. Ed then farmed until 1967 and later worked for Design Homes, Jack Steiner Construction, Martin Luther Prep School and retired from Prairie du Chien Correctional Institution. In retirement, Ed enjoyed gardening, tinkering and playing Solitaire. 

Edward is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his children, Kevin (Gail), their child Jennifer (Todd) Vasconcellos; Karen (Gerry) Thuli, their children Brian (Tami) and Eric (Danielle)Morris; Kurt (Julie), their children Craig (Alicia), Brock and Allison; Ed (Roberta), their children Samantha and Derek; Kent (Carole), their children Claire and Carter; Kari (Rick Buening), their children Tyler, Caleb and Cortney; Keith (Kristin), their children Viola and Lucille. He is further survived by great-grandchildren Maizah and Koah Thuli, Riley and Callum Gilkes and Victoria Vasconcellos; sisters Glennis Whitish, Phyllis Slaght; brother Terry Gilkes; sister-in-law Mary Kitzman; brothers-in-law Bill (Nan) Dagnon and Paul (Barb) Dagnon; many nieces, nephews and cousins. 

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, infant son Kraig; brother Kenneth (Marilyn) Gilkes; in-laws William (Lucille) Dagnon; and brothers-in-law Ed Whitish and Gerald Kitzman. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, July 31, at 11 a.m. at St. Gabriel’s Church of the Holy Family Parish, Msgr. Charles Stoetzel officiating, with burial in the Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Prairie Catholic School. The Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien is assisting the family.
