These Rotary Club of Prairie du Chien banners are an inviting addition to Marquette Road. The club previously had flower baskets donning the highway, until reconstruction of the road eliminated the space for those. The Prairie du Chien Rotary Club recently unveiled 10 brand new banners, which can be seen affixed to light poles along Marquette Road in Prairie du Chien. The colorful banners show off photos of the area taken by local photographers Scott Boylen, Jean Farrell, and Dr. Donna Higgins. They were also ordered through Sports World in Prairie du Chien.

“We had a small committee get together to plan out photos that were local and relevant to the area, and that’s how we came up with the ideas of what photos to use on the banners,” said Roxie Shipley, co-president of the Rotary Club.

In the past, the club placed flower pots alongside the road, a project that, Shipley said, was well received within the community.

“People really enjoyed the flower pots and they connected the Rotary Club to the pots,” she said.

The flower pots flanked the west side of the Marquette Road sidewalk for 25 years, until 2017 road construction eliminated the space for them.

“Now, with the new banners, people will hopefully continue to make those connections,” she said.

Acccording to several longtime club members, beautifying the community makes it a special place to live, and these projects follows the Rotary misison to make a difference in people’s lives through the community and around the world.

With the city’s help in putting them up and taking them down, the banners will be displayed throughout the summer and fall season but will be taken down for the winter season. Shipley said, however, the Rotary Club is looking into other options for something to install during the winter.

The total cost of the project ws $3,780. The club was awarded a Rotary district grant in the amount of $1,860—covering about half the cost.

In addition to its emphasis on beautification, the Prairie du Chien Rotary Club has been active in other ways. They’ve built a shelter at Fort Fun, fundraised for a camper dorm at Wisconsin Badger Camp, sponsored more than 20 international exchange students, organized Mississippi River Adventure Day, took on Operation Santa three years ago when the founding organization disbanded, facilitated the disc golf course on St. Feriole Island, funded school lunches during COVID-19 out-of-school time, and acted on international projects over the years.
