The Crossing Rivers Health leadership team and Board of Directors has announced the decision to discontinue child care services, effective Friday, Oct. 16.

“This decision is a heavy one, as we know the burden this places on our staff and the families we serve,” shared Garith Steiner, Chief Executive Officer at Crossing Rivers Health. The decision came after extensive review and consideration of the child care service with the goal of finding a solution to the service’s long-standing financial loss.

“We are disappointed that we weren’t able to find a solution or a model that could allow us to continue this program. There is no good time to make a change such as this.”

Steadily declining enrollment over the past five years coupled with child-to-teacher ratio requirements, compounded by overhead costs has resulted in a negative impact to the organization of nearly $400,000 annually.

Katie Garrity, president of the Crossing Rivers Health Board of Directors stated, “Providing any service at a loss for an extended period of time is a challenge. It is our responsibility to ensure the long-term sustainability of our hospital, clinics and health care services vital to the communities we serve.”

“While child care is undoubtedly a wide-spread community need, it is not a service typically provided by a health care organization,” noted Steiner. “We remained committed to the service for as long as we were able, and we continue to be dedicated to supporting our area families and the education and development of our youth.”

Regarding the affected staff members, Steiner stated, “Our staff are to be commended for the safe, high quality child care they have provided over the years. This decision has absolutely no reflection on their service. We are grateful for their dedication, and we will take care of them through this transition, as they have taken care of the children of our communities.”
