“Follow your passion — and if you don’t know what it is, realize that one reason for your existence on earth is to find it.” — Oprah Winfrey.

National Women's Small Business month is celebrated each year in October. During that time women are recognized for their supporting roles as small business leaders across the nation.

An advocacy group notes:

• Women own 42% of businesses in the United States.

•Women-owned businesses generate $1.9 trillion annually.

•Women of color account for 50% of female business owners.

These statistics represent the outstanding progress female entrepreneurs have made over the years.

Andrea Meyer of AM Painting is the sole proprietor of her newly-created painting and renovation business. Meyer is a native of Guttenberg but now resides in Edgewood with her three children, Alyssa, Morgan and Jake.

Meyer recognized her enthusiasm for art, color and design in high school. "I have always had a passion for color and design," Meyer noted. "I enjoyed art class in school and always visualized myself utilizing my talent on a much larger scale. My parents, Lonnie and Rose Moser, often asked for my input when remodeling or redecorating the house, and I thank them for teaching me you can do anything you want in life, just work hard and believe in yourself."

Meyer has seven years experience as an employee of Meuser Lumber Co., working with contractors and assisting in the paint and kitchen design of homes. She also has experience in drywall taping, mudding and texturing, learning the trade from another female business owner, Lisa Johnson. "I have been able to use these skills to help customers with small remodel jobs as well," she commented.

Meyer is fully insured and offers free estimates on interior and exterior painting and staining projects. "I can tackle your project from start to finish. My greatest reward is the outcome. I love to stand back and experience the homeowner's reaction when they see how much their space can be transformed with color," she said with a smile.

Meyer hopes to grow her business and hire more people to join her team. "I am not opposed to travel and have completed projects as far away as Cedar Rapids," she shared.

Supporting local businesses is important to Meyer. "I try to purchase all my painting and staining supplies in Guttenberg." She went on to say, "I like to use Valspar and Sherwin Williams paints, and usually recommend them to my customers for their durability."

Choosing the right paint color is important. The shade we pick to adorn the walls is a fundamental part of any interior design project. It is most often the element the rest of our aesthetic choices are based on. "I love picking out colors!" She explained, "Choosing the ideal color is far from easy. There are so many color options available and picking one can become easily overwhelming for the homeowner not knowing where to start. I am here to help!"

Meyer concluded, "It seemed kind of crazy to take on the challenge of starting my own business in the middle of a world-wide pandemic, but I have no regrets!"
