Central volleyball falls to 0-7

The Central Warriors volleyball team wrapped up the Midland Tournament on Sept. 5. They entered the tournament 0-3 on the season, and the struggles continued. 

In match one, they took on the Cascade Cougars, dropping both sets, 21-5 and 21-11. 

The team had five kills on 41 attempts, and was led by Kaitlyn Wiley with three. Ava Pensel earned the team’s four assists. In total, Central netted one ace serve on 17 serve attempts, with an 88.2 percent serve efficiency. 

On defense, they scored 15 digs, seven of which went to Maddie Wille. 

In match two, Central faced off against the Springville Orioles, losing both sets, 21-7 and 21-13. 

This time, the Warriors were a little stouter on offense, with four kills on 45 attempts. Isabelle Groth led the way in the kills department with two, and Pensel had three assists. Brandy Beatty had two of the team’s three ace serves. They had 19 serve attempts and a serve efficiency of 84.2 percent, establishing consistency in this aspect of the game.

Chelsia Larson had Central’s only block, while Wille secured five of the team’s six digs.   

In game three, against the Marquette Catholic Mohawks, the Warriors were competitive, flashing talent even in the loss. They won set one 21-16 before dropping the next two, 21-16 and 16-14, losing the match 2-1. 

In the kills department, Central had 12, with three apiece coming from Beatty, Lexi Loan and Groth. Pensel continued to dominate in assists, being responsible for six of the team’s nine total assists, and she also had one of the team’s five ace serves. The Warriors had 50 serve attempts and a serve efficiency of 90 percent.  

Defensively, the team had one block, earned by Larson, and 34 digs, led by Wille, who amassed 18 of them. 

In the final game of the tournament, Central took on the Monticello Panthers, losing both games, 21-16 and 21-9. 

The Warriors totaled eight kills, with Loan  having three. For the game, they had 47 kill attempts with five kill errors and a kill efficiency of 6.4 percent. As for assists, familiar name Pensel scored all six for the team. On serving, the Warriors had four ace serves on 26 attempts, with a serve efficiency of 84.6 percent.

The team picked up no blocks, but had 11 digs, with Beatty leading the way with four. 

The Warriors now stand at 0-7 and head into this week still looking for their first win of the season at the Jesup Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 12.
