The Central wrestling team endured a tough dual event at South Winneshiek last week, suffering three defeats.

According to coach Joe Koehn, one of the issues plaguing the team was basic strength.

“Strength is a big thing; technique is going to take you further, but once you get to see those good teams, then strength plays a key factor in competing. We lift twice a week during the season, but the biggest part of that is gained in the off season,” he said.

In the first dual against Edgewood-Colesburg, which was the most competitive, the Warriors won two of five matches, but ultimately lost 36-27, mostly due to forfeits. Spencer Heer (182 pounds) provided the team’s lone pin victory, while team captain Nick Deitchler (132 pounds) pulled out a 4-0 decision.

“I thought we really came out ready to go and were competitive. We had a few kids coming back from injuries and missing some time, so they were a little rusty, but that’s part of that adversity that we need to learn to deal with,” Koehn said.

Against Sumner-Fredricksburg, Central didn’t perform that poorly, with victories by Deitchler, Daniel Royer (120 pounds) and Sean Wilwert (160 pounds), but lost the other matches via fall, and had to forfeit six of them.

“We had some good match-ups there as well. There were a couple where we were ahead and got caught, or just not being aggressive enough. We have to push the pace and good things will come,” Koehn commented.

Finally, against South Winneshiek, the team failed to win a single match, losing all five via pin. South Winn won the dual 72-6, with Central’s points coming via forfeit. Three of the losses came in under a minute.

Quick losses have plagued the team all season. When asked about the dual and the quick losses, Koehn replied, “We just didn’t match up well with them. There were a couple matches we should’ve been competitive in/won, but things happen, and we need to learn to move on and get better from it. Movement, they should have that word branded into their brains by now. Their opponent cannot get their offense going if we keep moving, and the more we move, the more our offense opens up and provides more opportunities to score.”

However, the season has produced some standout wrestlers, most notably Deitchler, who returned this season after suffering an injury last year, and Maria Medberry, who won two extra matches against South Winneshiek, both via fall in less than 90 seconds.

“Nick is having a very good season, after last year suffering a season ending injury. He really put in a lot of work in the off season and has gotten much better. He is one of the captains on my team and how he acts on the mat and in practice shows why he is having the success that he is having,” Koehn commented.

This week will see the Warriors host a meet on Tuesday, Jan. 19. The boys will head to Midland for the John Byers Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 23, while the girls, Medberry, Rebecca Suhr and Brandy Beatty, will travel to Iowa City for the IWCOA Girls State.
