The MFL MarMac boys basketball team struggled to gain momentum in a 73-23 loss to Edgewood-Colesburg in Class 1A Substate 3 first round playoff action Feb. 15.

The Viking offense couldn’t be contained, pushing a 15-4 first quarter lead to 39-8 by halftime. The team shot 50 percent from the field, including a 7-18 clip from behind the arc, in the 50-point victory.

The Bulldogs had their best quarter in the fourth, scoring 10 points, but had five or fewer in the other three periods. They shot just 39.1 percent from the field, and sunk only three of 11 three-point attempts. Turnovers were also an issue: MFL MarMac coughed the ball up 23 times while Ed-Co committed just nine.

Cullen McShane led the Bulldogs with seven points. He also had four rebounds, a steal and a block. Wyatt Powell’s stat line included three points, three rebounds and a team-high two steals. Ben Miene chipped in three points, an assist and a block, while Cayden Ball had three points and an assist. Carver Blietz-Bentien finished the game with two points, a block and a team-leading five rebounds.

The season ending loss put MFL MarMac’s overall record at 7-15. The team was 7-9 in the Upper Iowa Conference this year, finishing in sixth place.
