ROADS HARD HIT BY RAINS, FLOOD

The heavy rains of the past few weeks have put a heavier work load on the county’s Secondary Roads Department.  “It was more in the northern part of the county, but locally, it’s bad all over,” County Engineer Rafe Koopman said.  “There are a lot more mud spots than we usually see and we need to be hauling spot rock to handle the problem.”

Royale Daniels

Royale A. Daniels, 82, of Maynard, Iowa died on Thursday morning, September 29, 2016, at Oelwein Health Care Center in Oelwein.

Royale Avis Halverson was born August 20, 1934, in Gunder, Clayton County, Iowa, the daughter of Roy G. and Alvina (Ruroden) Halverson. She graduated from Elkader High School, Elkader, Iowa, in the Class of 1952. Royale married James E. Daniels and two children were born to this union, Jari and Brad. Royale and Jim later divorced. Royale was a homemaker, Avon lady, ceramics teacher and worked for Rockwell Collins for many years, retiring in 1999. She was a member of Highland Lutheran Church. Royale enjoyed traveling, ceramics and visiting with family and friends.

Mary Ingles

Mary Helen Ingles, age 58, of Garber, IA, died Wednesday, September 28, 2016, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, after a sudden illness. She was born in Prairie du Chien WI, on August 9, 1958, the daughter of Raymond and Helen Storbeck.

Sons and Daughters - Gifford inducted into Hall of Fame


Marshall Gifford, Class of 1989, is the newest inductee into the Central Hall of Fame. Gifford and his two brothers, Tom and Andrew, grew up in Elkader.

Since graduating high school 27 years ago, Central’s newest Hall of Fame inductee has earned a college degree, gotten married, started a family and launched a successful financial consulting practice. And every step of the way, he has carried with him the lessons he learned growing up in rural Iowa.

Allen McCandless

Allen McCandless born in Ontario October 2, 1919, passed away in Toronto, Canada August 17, 2016, at Bethany Homes. He trusted Christ as his savior at 14 years of age. Allen lived in Garnavillo from 1992-2005. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force as an airplane mechanic. He farmed in southwestern Ontario for many years.

He was survived by his six children: Murray (Shirley) of Sussex, New Brunswick, Tim (Betty) of Greene, IA, Esther (John) Kregel of Garnavillo, Jim (Daiva) of Hickory, NC, Mary (Dave) Zuidema of Midland Park, NJ and Rachel (Andrew) Ussher of Richmond Hill, Ontario.  He is also survived by one brother, Lyle of Ontario.

Angeline Berns

Angeline Berns, age 87, of Garnavillo, IA, died Monday, September 12, 2016, at the Guttenberg Care Center. She was born on October 8, 1928 in Garnavillo, the daughter of Henry and Catherine (Eglseder) Schmelzer.

Angeline received her education locally and worked in the Garnavillo area. On October 16, 1951, she was united in marriage with Robert Berns at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Garnavillo. For many years, Angeline farmed with her husband and made their home together. She spent a great deal of time working in her garden from which she became an expert in canning her produce as well as canning beef.  She made the best strawberry jam, was an avid quilter and was known as everybody’s aunt.
