The new school year brought a few new faces to Central Schools. The district added seven new employees: Mycala Briggs, social worker; Deborah Deitchler, 6-12 Special Education teacher; Eric Gronowski, 6-12 Special Education associate; Shelby Huster, counselor; Jeff Robinson, maintenance; Lauren Schwendinger, 4-5 teacher; and Allison Walch, district secretary.

Bud Schuchmann

Bud Schuchmann, 91, of Strawberry Point, Iowa, passed away on Monday, August 29, 2016, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home. He was born on April 11, 1925, in Strawberry Point, the son of Paul and Hilda (Schmidt) Schuchmann. Bud was raised and educated in country schools near Strawberry Point. 

On July 21, 1949, Bud was united in marriage to Marian Rafoth in McGregor. After their marriage, they began their life together on a farm near Strawberry Point. Three children were born to this union. Bud was a long-time livestock buyer for Schuchmann Livestock.

Eileen Johanningmeier

Eileen Cecelia (Auer) Johanningmeier, 94, of McGregor, Iowa, died Friday, August 26, 2016, at her home surrounded by her loving family. Eileen was born on May 14, 1922, rural Garnavillo, Iowa, to Edward and Josephine (Heck) Auer. She attended Walnut Grove Country School and St. Patrick Catholic School in Monona, Iowa, through the eighth grade. Later in life, Eileen and her sisters went back to school and received their G.E.D. Diplomas.

River crests lower than expected


Top and middle: A volunteer force of more than 500 people filled sandbags last week to protect lower South Main Street from floodwaters. A 27-foot crest was predicted for the Turkey River. The river actually crested at 22.5 feet.

Ruth Jeanne Werges

Ruth Jeanne Werges, 87, of Garnavillo, died Tuesday, August 23, 2016, at Elkader Care Center. Ruth was born September 14, 1928, to Russell and Virgie (Wilson) Livingston at Volga, IA. 

Ruth attended school at Elkader. She spent one year at Corpus Christie, Texas, as a nanny. On December 2, 1945, she married Raymond E. Werges, Jr in Elkader at Peace Church. They were long-time members of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Garnavillo.

Gene Leslie Patrick, 90, of Guttenberg, IA, died Thursday, August 25, 2016, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital. He was born on October 30, 1925, the son of Leslie and Bertha (Hyde) Patrick in rural Osterdock.

Many people need licenses to sell particular goods and services. However, there’s a fellow in Elkader who sells actual licenses—Creative Licenses. More specifically, he creates and sells artwork made out of vehicle license plates—and he sure does make huge statement doing so!

SUPERVISORS LOOK AT REZONING ISSUE

More than 50 people attended an August 15 public hearing to discuss a request from the Pattison Sand Company to rezone some land around its mining operation from A1 (agricultural) to M2 (heavy industrial), which would allow underground mining. Planning and Zoning Commissioner Janet Ott told the group that the P&Z has recommended that the land be rezoned.  She also said that the commission had included several restrictions and suggestions for the rezoning.

Verneil “Neil” Huggins

Neil was born on the Fourth of July, 1937, in the small town of Elkader, Iowa ,to parents Russell and Geneva. He was a patriot, proud of his country, an Eagle Scout and served four years in the Air Force. He always enjoyed his birthday, wearing his patriotic colors, and, of course, there had to be fireworks. Neil attended school in Elkader, played all the sports and made long-time relationships with his coach and teammates. From teenage years, he helped neighbors and friends and that continued until his passing. He was a kind, outgoing, compassionate person full of energy for every activity. He was a loving, devoted husband, great brother, uncle and friend.
