TAX REBATE FOR LOCAL COMPANY

The Elkader City Council last week approved a resolution that will help a local company expand its labor force. Mobile Track Solutions will receive a 24 percent property tax rebate over 10 years (equal to $240,628), as part of a local match to the Iowa Economic Development Authority’s High Quality Jobs program. MTS plans to add 30 new jobs and invest more than $5.1 million in a new facility in Elkader.

Anthony “Tony” Schmelzer

Anthony “Tony” Schmelzer, 60, of Elkader, died Monday, April 25, 2016, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinic in Iowa City, Iowa. Tony was born on June 28, 1955, to Joseph and Anita (Berns) Schmelzer in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. He graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1973. Tony was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader, Iowa.

Helen Hawkins

Helen Hawkins, 97, of Garnavillo, IA, died Friday, April 29, 2016, at the Elkader Care Center. She was born on November 27, 1918, in Osterdock, the daughter of Louis and Caroline (Brase) Troester.

Helen received her education from the country school in rural Guttenberg. On November 7, 1942, Helen was united in marriage with Delbert James Hawkins at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Garnavillo  Helen and Delbert lived in various areas in Clayton County until 1953 where they settled in the Buck Creek area outside of Garnavillo. They farmed there until early 1975 when the moved into Garnavillo, becoming caretakers at the Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home.

Best Birthday Ever! - Veteran receives Quilt of Valor

A Northeast Iowa man celebrated a recent milestone with a special surprise: During a family dinner for his 50th birthday, he was presented a Quilt of Valor honoring his military service.

Linda Dettbarn arranged the surprise for her husband, Ken. Though the Elkader couple’s entire family knew about the presentation, they managed to keep it a secret.

Parents’ group scores grant

A local project has hit a homerun with the Minnesota Twins baseball organization. The Minneapolis-based major league ball club recently awarded the Elkader Funds for Fields Committee a $9,780 grant for a project to reconstruct the town’s baseball fields.

Karl Wilker

Karl Wilker, 86, of Clermont, IA died Thursday, April 14, 2016, at Maple Crest Manor, Fayette, IA. Karl Henry was born on October 15, 1929, to Arthur and Hertha (Funk) Wilker in Clayton County, Iowa. He was baptized on November 3, 1929, in Read Township and confirmed on June 27, 1943, in Farmersburg, Iowa. Karl attended country school. He also helped on the farm with his father.

Ethelyn Berns

Ethelyn Berns, 90, of Elkader, died Monday, April 18, at the Elkader Care Center. Her funeral service was held Friday, April 22, at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg, with burial at Monona Cemetery. 

Ethelyn was born September 7, 1925, in Wagner Township, Clayton County, to Lester and Esther Kurth. She graduated from Farmersburg High School and Upper Iowa University. She taught elementary grades and art in rural schools and at MFL in Monona for 33 years.

John Koresh

John Raymond Koresh, 68, of Elkader, died suddenly Saturday, April 16, 2016, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader. John was born on April 4, 1948, to John and Arlene (Stagman) Koresh in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. He graduated from Prairie du Chien High School in 1967.

John worked for 3M in Prairie du Chien for 34 years. He retired in 2002. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, camping, fishing, hunting and watching westerns. Most of all, John enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
