Wauzeka-Steuben School District sets spring referendum

The Wauzeka-Steuben School District has approved a referendum to be part of the spring 2020 general election in the district. Voters will have opportunities to become informed about the three-year, non-recurring operational referendum in the months leading up to choosing yes or no on the ballot.

At the Jan. 13 regular school board meeting, the board formalized two resolutions allowing the referendum and including state-approved verbiage for the referendum, as it will appear for constituent consideration on April 7.

Walking path desired on Prairie Maison/Bluff Haven site

The Growing Connections Walking Path is anticipated to be located on the southwest side of the Prairie Maison/Bluff Haven complex. It will feature trees, shrubs, flowers, decorative rock and bricks, benches, lighting, bridges and flowing water. (Drawing by Outdoor Creations)

A serene, lush and safe walking path will be enjoyed by residents and tenants of the Prairie Maison nursing home and Bluff Haven assisted living facility if the Community Health Services Foundation realizes its goal of raising approximately $69,000.

The proposed, 6-foot-wide, 752-foot-long, continuous walking path is an effort of the Growing Connections Campaign. This is driven by the non-profit foundation in celebration of the campus’ 10 year anniversary at its current location, with a goal of completion set for summer of 2020.

Eagles Telethon could surpass $1 million total at 45th annual event

It’s certainly likely the metaphorical dollar will be raised during this year’s Eagles Heart and Cancer Telethon Saturday, Jan. 25. But there is a good chance, based on previous years’ totals, that the fundraiser could surpass $1 million overall at the 45th annual event. (Telethon file photos)

In honor of caricaturist John Mundt, who passed away in December but was a longtime part of the Eagles Telethon, there will be an easel and two empty chairs set up in the back of the room this year.

Call in during the telethon to have the name of a family member or friend who needs hope of any kind for any reason.

Each year, for the past 45 years, the goal has been for the Eagles Heart and Cancer Telethon to raise just one dollar. The annual fundraiser has eclipsed that metaphorical amount hundreds of thousands of times over.

For the 2020 telethon this Saturday, Jan. 25, organizers are, in fact, eyeing the $1 million mark.

70th Fisheree could be pike paradise, bass bonanza

It might take a really nice fish to claim the biggest largemouth bass or northern pike prize at this year’s Prairie du Chien Ice Fisheree because the hard water anglers have been hauling in some big ones in the weeks leading up to the big event. Local angler John Balk holds a 20-inch largemouth he caught on a recent day fishing with tip-ups. He also caught a 34-inch, 15-year-old (est.) northern pike that day. Balk and numerous others have caught bass and northerns about this size, which have been the norm on Gremore Lake as of late. Assorted panfish and some nice walleyes have also added to the excitement. No fish were harmed in the taking of this photo. They were released. (Photo by guide Gary Howe)

The Prairie du Chien Area Chamber of Commerce will welcome area ice fishing enthusiasts to Prairie du Chien for the 70th Annual Ice Fisheree on Jan. 31, Feb. 1 and Feb. 2, with headquarters at the Crooked Oar Bar and Marina. Fishing is open to bodies of water in the Prairie du Chien area, with concentration on Gremore Lake. The fishing begins on Saturday at 7 a.m. and Sunday at 8 a.m.

Seneca over Weston, Boland gets 500th win

Seneca boys basketball coach David Boland holds a ball commemorating his 500th career victory following Tuesday night’s win over Weston.

 

Seneca overwhelmed visiting Weston 64-12 in a Ridge and Valley boys basketball game Tuesday night. 

Seneca upped their record to 8-5 on the season and 5-2 in the Ridge and Valley Conference. Weston fell to 0-7.

Seneca Coach David Boland gained his 500th career victory.

Prairie grapplers dominate Dodgeville

Junior Chase Fisher applies pressure from top to keep his opponent’s hips down. Fisher would win by decision 6-4.

 

On Thursday, Jan. 16, the Prairie du Chien grapplers welcomed SWC foe Dodgeville to town for some wrestling action. Prior to the meet, Parents Night took place, with all wrestlers and cheerleaders being introduced and recognized before a large group of wrestling supporters. In addition, Bradyn Saint and Colten Wall received plaques for their 100th wins and Tyler Hannah for his 150th win. It was also Alumni Night. Dozens of PdC wrestling alumni were recognized. Tom and Cathie Nelson were recognized as “Fans of the Year.” Tom and Cathie can be seen at most all PdC wrestling events. If they aren’t cheering the Hawks on together, it’s because Tom calls a number of the duals for WPRE radio. The Prairie du Chien Color Guard led the National Anthem and the grappling began.

The Prairie du Chien-Fennimore gymnastics team hosted Southwestern-Cuba City-Benton-Darlington on Monday in the team’s final home dual of the season. 

PdC-F also celebrated Senior Night and honored Kylee O’Kane, Hannah Garrity and manager Zach Mara after the meet.

Shirley E. Ellis

Shirley E. Ellis, 78, of Patch Grove, passed away Sunday, Jan. 19, 2020, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Shirley was born on April 12, 1941, the daughter of Roy and Edna (Jarms) Haberichter. She, her father, and her grandmother, were all born in the same farmhouse located southeast of Monona, Iowa. Shirley spent her early childhood in Clayton County, Iowa, moved to the Patch Grove area in 1952, and graduated from Patch Grove High School in 1958. She married Jerry Ellis on Oct. 24, 1959, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Bagley. Shirley and Jerry raised their family in the home that he built in 1960. Shirley was the Patch Grove Village Clerk for 18 years, and secretary/treasurer for the Patch Grove Fire Department for 31 years. Shirley enjoyed time spent with her family, reading, sewing, gardening, and dancing with Jerry.
