A Quilt of Valor is a handmade covering of red, white and blue fabric layers and padding stitched together with kindness and gratitude. It is presented to a veteran or military service member touched by war, free of charge, as a token of thanks from the community in hopes of providing comfort, peace and healing. Some are presented in public ceremonies, while others have been given in private. To request one for yourself or a loved one, one must simply ask.

Across southwest Wisconsin and northeast Iowa, especially in the past five years, quilting groups have enjoyed selecting the perfect patriotic patterns and piecing them together for quilt creations that each have a one-of-a-kind design. Just as every veteran has a unique story of their own experiences, the Quilts of Valor awarded are also distinctive and meaningful.

John R. Walker

John R. Walker, 70, of Eastman, passed away at Divine Rehab and Nursing in Fennimore, on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2019.

John was born on Oct. 3, 1949, to Charles and Anna (Mara) Walker.

He was always ready with a smile and a joke. John loved playing pool and watching videos to improve his game and loved watching the live cattle auctions online. He was an avid watcher of the RFD channel, always watching tractor auctions, farming shows, and the trains rambling through the countryside. John developed a wonderful relationship with his hospice team from Crossing Rivers Health; they all were so wonderful, and he appreciated all the help they provided. He also developed great relationships with his team at Divine Rehab and Nursing Fennimore. Thank you all for his wonderful care.

Trailer up in flames

The Mt. Hope Fire Department fought a trailer fire in the village Thursday morning, Nov. 7. According to department officials, the owner had just purchased the trailer and moved his belongings inside but was not actually living there yet. No one was injured and the cause is still unknown. (Photos by Emily Schendel, Fennimore Times)

UPDATE Wednesday, Nov. 13, 10:20 a.m.: A trailer house in Mt. Hope is a total loss following a fire last Thursday, Nov. 7.

“We think it was a combination of furnace troubles and an older trailer,” Mt. Hope Fire Chief Rick French shared. “It’s unclear if it was the wiring or furnace that exactly started it. We saw nothing suspicious. The renter reported that he could smell smoke and he opened the door and [the fire] got the oxygen it needed and the trailer became fully engulfed in flames.”

French noted, it took about two and a half hours to get the fire completely extinguished and their work finished.

Patch Grove and Fennimore assisted at the scene.

Currently, donations are being accepted for the owner, who lost all his possessions in the fire, at Reliable Auto Detailing, in Prairie du Chien.

W-S approves tax levy decrease, though referendum looms

By Correne Martin

The Wauzeka-Steuben School District approved a tax levy of $1,019,503, and a mill rate of $11.68, for the 2019-20 school year, to be extended to all taxable property within the district.

This means that, for every $1,000 of taxable value, $11.68 is asked in taxes to the school district—or on the typical example of a $100,000 home, $1,168 is owed.

According to information presented at the district’s Oct. 28 annual meeting, the school tax levy will decrease by 6.88 percent from last year, and the mill rate will also go down from $12.71 to $11.68.
