Canadian Pacific Holiday Train stopping in Marquette Sunday

The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train, adorned with tens of thousands of lights, will transport holiday cheer, Santa and a stage for live musical performances, into Marquette’s Riverfront Marina on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 2:45 p.m.

The brightly decorated Canadian Pacific train will stop for all to experience, with the intention of also helping the community and surrounding area collect food and money for the Clayton County Food Shelf.

Last year, the local Canadian Pacific stop netted the Clayton County Food Shelf $11,053.99 and 2,935 pounds of food.

The Holiday Train is in high demand. The communities of Marquette, McGregor and Prairie du Chien are fortunate to have it stop in this area.

Virgil W. Fette

Virgil William Fette, 86, of St. Olaf, Iowa, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2019. 

Virgil was born April 25, 1933, in Elkader, Iowa, to Albert and Rosina (Glawe) Fette. 

He attended elementary school in St. Olaf up to eighth grade. Virgil was united in marriage to Dolores Geisler at St. Peters Lutheran Church, Prairie du Chien, on Oct. 6, 1953. He enjoyed farming all of his life until his retirement in 1995. Virgil enjoyed dancing, playing cards, being outdoors and spending time with family and friends. He was a member of the Norway Lutheran Church and enjoyed his church family. He served on the board of the St. Olaf Co-op and St. Olaf Feed and Supply.

Betty Steiber, 93, of Lansing, Iowa, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2019, at Thornton Manor, Lansing, Iowa. 

Betty was born on Sept. 10, 1926, to Dewey and Lula (Brockmeyer) Gramlich.

Alma Ready

Alma Elizabeth Ready, 100 years, three months and one day, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2019, at Atrium Post Acute Care of Lancaster.  

She was the sixth child born to Sylvia Caroline (Havill) and Albert L. Clark on Aug. 25, 1919.

Alma was baptized June 10, 1928, and confirmed June 4, 1933, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Bagley by Pastor Max Fritchell. On Nov. 18, 1936, Alma was joined in marriage to Lynn Fred Ready by Rev. J.J. Lippoldt. To this union was born Mary Lynn, 1944; James Roger, 1947; Catherine Marie, 1956; Lynn David, 1958; and Rebecca Ruth, 1962. From 1947 until 1988, the couple farmed a 160-acre farm just outside of Bloomington. Upon their retirement, they moved into town.

Justin Reuter

Justin Kenneth Reuter, 30, of McGregor, Iowa, and formerly of Bloomington, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Nov. 26 at the Guttenberg Hospital following his courageous battle with cancer. 

He was born Dec. 21, 1988, as Justin Kenneth Lange to Diane Lange, and later became Justin Reuter when Diane married Cory Reuter in 1993.

Fennimore defeated host River Ridge 70-48 in a nonconference boys basketball game Tuesday night, Nov. 26.

Fennimore led 35-27 at the half. 

The Golden Eagles took the second half 35-21 to earn the victory in the opening game of the season for both teams.

Sixth ranked River Ridge defeated visiting Wauzeka-Steuben 55-31 Thursday night in girls basketball.

River Ridge improved to 1-0 on the season. Wauzeka-Steuben dropped to 0-2. 

River Ridge will travel to Fennimore on Nov. 26. 

Wauzeka-Steuben will travel to Southwestern on Nov. 26.

Ferryville plans Christmas Tree Lighting community celebration on Dec. 2


Santa Claus himself will make a special visit to Ferryville’s Christmas Tree Lighting celebration Dec. 2, to meet with the good girls and boys and give them treats. (Submitted photo)

On Monday, Dec. 2, in Ferryville, the ninth annual Christmas Tree Lighting will happen and everyone is invited. Santa hears children’s Christmas wishes and all sing Christmas carols and enjoy treats as the lights of the holiday season are lit. The event takes place at the observation deck of River View Park in the center of the village of Ferryville.

Santa will arrive at 5:30 p.m. to hear what children want for Christmas and, then, at 6 p.m., the elves will light the Christmas tree for the season. The Ferryville Tourism Council will lead everyone in Christmas carols while all can enjoy a cup of hot chocolate and have holiday cookies and treats. Plus, there are gift bags for children. This is a fun time for all so don’t miss out.

The shining star of Prairie du Chien’s Pop-Up Shop Program for the Christmas season is The Sweet Tooth, a new candy shop at 127 W. Blackhawk Ave. (recently vacated by The Broken Ladder). A grand opening is planned for Saturday, Nov. 30, in association with Small Business Saturday and the local Santa Shops Small promotion. 

With the support of Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) Entrepreneurial Support Grant funding, Crystal Priebe is the young entrepreneur taking a shot at her dream to be in the candy business.

David K. Evans II

David K. Evans II, 48, of Marquette, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 18, 2019, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn. 

He was born June 21, 1971, in St. Paul, Minn., the son of David and JoAnne (Everts) Evans. 

David owned and operated the Ole Sawmill Marina in Stillwater, Minn. He was also involved in various other businesses in the area. He was proud of his farm “Hunt More – Do Little.”
