Seneca is regional champ

Second-seeded Seneca beat visiting and third-seeded Highland three sets to one in a Division 4 regional final volleyball match Saturday night.

Seneca won by scores of 25-13, 25-20, 25-27, and 25-10.

Seneca will next travel to top-seeded Iowa Grant for a sectional semifinal Thursday night.

PdC presents ‘The Addams Family Musical’ comedy

Ally Schroeder plays Wednesday Addams, the irresistible bundle of malice, in this year’s fall musical. She’s all grown up in the musical and has found love, which his a problem because her fiancé is from a much different world than that of the Addams family and its values.

Dylan Skime sings and acts as Uncle Fester in the ensemble song, “Full Disclosure.” He reveals he’s in love with the moon.

Prairie du Chien High School students Ellie Mara and Jonah Hornseth portray Morticia and Gomez, two of the main characters in The Addams Family Musical. The Courier Press got a sneak peek into the entire cast and crew practice last evening.

The creepy and kooky, mysterious and spooky characters of “The Addams Family” will be portrayed by Prairie du Chien High School theater students when the Drama Hawks perform their fall musical Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8 and 9. Showtimes are 7 p.m. both days and an 11 a.m. matinee Saturday. Tickets may be purchased in the high school office or online at paac.ludus.com (where purchasers can enjoy $1 off admission). 

“The Addams Family Musical,” a new comedy, was selected by the district vocal music teacher and first-year director, Deedee Bradshaw, because of its fresh script, memorable music and suitability for a strong female-led cast.

New district administrator ready to build on PdC’s educational foundation

The new district administrator for Prairie du Chien Schools, Bryce Bird, released a letter to the community last week stating he’s honored and excited to serve in the capacity. Bird stepped into the position after outgoing superintendent Bob Smudde, who took a different leadership position in the Dodgeville School District, left Sept. 13.

Officially, Bird is interim district administrator. This means, he will be working on a part-time basis through the end of June 2020.

“This district is highly regarded as one of the top school districts in the state of Wisconsin. This tradition of excellence is due to the support and partnering of community members and the hard work of our students and staff,” Bird stated.

Prairie du Chien’s Ben Riter makes a good catch versus New Glarus-Monticello Friday night.

The #2 Prairie du Chien Blackhawks kicked off Level 1 of the WIAA Division 5 playoffs at home versus the #7 New Glarus-Monticello Knights on Friday night. 

The defenses shined in the first 3 quarters, as the teams combined for only 3 total touchdowns in that span.

Two area cross country runners have each earned a trip to the State Cross Country Meet in Wisconsin Rapids on Nov. 2.

Meg Katzung of Prairie du  Chien finished in fifth place at the Spring Green Golf Course Saturday morning in a Division 2 Sectional. Katzung had a time of 20:06.

BREAKING: One critically injured, another in custody following Eastman shooting

Google Maps shows the location of Martin Lane just south of Eastman, where the shooting occurred in the early morning hours of Friday, Oct. 25.

UPDATED MONDAY, OCT. 28, 10:30 A.M.

An Illinois man was detained by local law enforcement following a Friday morning shooting near Eastman that left another man critically injured, according to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department. Sheriff Dale McCullick said there is no threat to the public.

On Friday, Oct. 25, at about 1:20 a.m., Crawford County Dispatch received a 911 call from a woman who stated she was in a vehicle in a driveway and the male driver of the vehicle had been shot in the head as they were going out of the driveway.

Man charged with sexual assault

A 20-year-old Eastman man was charged in Crawford County Circuit on Oct. 21 with one count of first degree child sexual assault–sexual contact with a child under age 13.

Blake Garcia faces up to 60 years in prison if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint, Garcia admitted to investigators that he touched the child inappropriately.

The complaint alleges that there were three separate incidents between the years 2012 and 2014.

Woman arrested for meth possession

On Oct. 21, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit conducted a traffic stop on a 2006 Chrysler Town and Country on Highway 61 in the township of Scott. The driver was identified as Cynthia Herlitz, 52, Boscobel.

During the course of the traffic stop, K-9 Breck was utilized for an open free air sniff of the vehicle and gave a positive alert to the presence of one or more controlled substances within the vehicle. A search of the vehicle yielded a crystal like substance, which  later field-tested positive for methamphetamine. 

Herlitz was asked to perform standardized field sobriety tests. Herlitz was ultimately arrested and charged with possession of methamphetamine and operating with a restricted controlled substance (first offense).

Voters encouraged to come discuss April 2020 potential

Enrollment in the Wauzeka-Steuben School District has been on a gradual decline since the 2002-03 school year, according to Interim Administrator Gary Albrecht. Tax rate levels, operational costs and capital project needs are being examined, and an April 2020 operating referendum proposal will be explored at the district’s annual meeting Monday, Oct. 28, at about 6:45 p.m., in the Hornet’s Nest gym. District taxpayers are urged to attend and give input.

Abuse is all around us: Domestic violence and sexual assault

“Everyone just assumes domestic violence is physical abuse. But, it’s also financial abuse, sexual abuse, power and control, verbal abuse, elder abuse—anything intended to hurt or humiliate someone. 

“It is all around us. It’s in our circles of family and friends.”

These unwanted acts may be happening out of sight and go unnoticed to most citizens; however, domestic abuse and sexual assault are here in Crawford County, according to Glenda and Becky, two local support services advocates who requested their last names be kept from the public as a safety measure.
