Trick-or-treat in Prairie du Chien Saturday

The coming weekend is Prairie du Chien’s big weekend to celebrate Halloween, trick-or-treating, costume contests, fun and games.

Bring the kids to Blackhawk Avenue on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 1 to 3 p.m., for the city’s annual trick-or-treating at downtown businesses. Orange pumpkins will be in the windows of participating  merchants.

The route starts with Mississippi Meats, Radio Shack and True Value, then passes through small business row, up and down Blackhawk Avenue. It also includes Backstage Pass on Wacouta Avenue, A Cut Above and Café Hope on North Beaumont Road and the River District Inn and Waterfront Hotel on Main Street.

Ronald F. Wittbrodt

Ronald F. Wittbrodt, 78, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Thursday, Oct. 17, 2019, at Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse, following a brief illness. 

He was born Dec. 10, 1940, in Bay City, Mich., the son of Casimir and Marjorie (Weber) Wittbrodt. He married the love of his life, Patricia Williams, on March 9, 1962, in St. Joseph, Mo. Ron worked as a master electrician, mainly for H & H Electric, until his retirement in 2008.  Ron was a member of the IBEW.

Mark Andrew Pfeiffer

Mark Andrew Pfeiffer, 65, of Terre Haute, Ind., passed away on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2019, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, surrounded by his loving family. 

Mark was born in Pensacola, Fla., on Dec. 10, 1953, to U.S. Navy Dr. Donald W. and Marlys Pfeiffer.

High school friends take on Air Force adventures together

Friends Nick Weber and Andrew Scott enlisted in the Wisconsin National Guard after graduating from Prairie du Chien High School in 2016. (Submitted photos)

Andrew Scott and Nick Weber are on a base classified as a Forward Operating Base (FOB). They are both E-4 ranked senior airmen in the Air Force and are responsible for maintenance and oversight of F-16 fighter jet systems.

This is an example of the F-16 fighter jet the Prairie du Chien airforcemen work on at their Madison Air Force base and during their current deployment in Afghanistan.

High school friends Andrew Scott and Nick Weber are airmen in the Air Force National Guard and have been deployed in Afghanistan together since July. The pair of 2016 Prairie du Chien High School graduates perform maintenance on and oversee systems within F-16s, the wildly-utilized fighter jets.

Now E-4 ranked senior airmen in the Air Force, Drew and Nick started their adventures as a dynamic duo in high school. They were teammates on the Prairie du Chien football and basketball teams. They even got a chance to play together when the varsity basketball team went to state in 2016, according to Scott.

DEATH NOTICE: Nancy Ann Heinrich, 84, of Beloit, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2019 in Wisconsin Rapids. Nancy was born August 5, 1935, in Beloit. No funeral services were held, per Nancy’s wishes.

Ronald 'Ron' Hartman

Ronald “Ron” Hartman, of McGregor, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2019, in La Crosse, at the age of 86. 

Ron was born on Dec. 16, 1932 in Watertown, to Lloyd and Marie Hartman. 

He graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in engineering. He married Linda, in 1991. He was an area manager for Material Service Corp. in the Chicago area for 25 years. Later, he became the owner/operator of Hartman’s Riverside Court in Harper’s Ferry, Iowa. Ron was an accomplished hunter and fisherman and loved spending as much time as he could pursuing these passions. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

City, property owners discuss remediation for flash flooding

The aftermath of the Sept. 12 heavy rain event left behind a discouraging amount of mud and debris in the eastern neighborhoods of Prairie du Chien.

A small representation of homeowners impacted by Prairie du Chien’s bluff-side flash flooding incident of Sept. 12 spoke at Tuesday’s city council meeting, after hearing what plans city officials have to make adjustments for the future. 

The storm brought three inches of rain in about 15 minutes, pushing mud, branches and other rubble from the 730 acres of land atop the bluffs down the Highway 27 corridor into the eastern neighborhood of the city beneath the bluffs.

“It came down fast and inundated the system,” said City Administrator Chad Abram, noting that by the time city officials could get on scene, it was too late to unplug the system.

Missy Hughes, the CEO of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC), visited Prairie du Chien Monday afternoon for a meeting with economic development officials in Peoples State Bank. Hughes then toured Cafe’ Hope and the newly opened Waterfront Hotel.

The Prairie du Chien School Board Monday night approved of rolling over the current loan to pay off the approximate $850,000 in cost overages for the $18.9 million facilities upgrade project into a 10-year loan. District Administrator Bryce Bird said the 10-year loan will be paid off at approximately $100,000 per year at 3.35 percent.
