Hospital’s lawsuit against county, town of Bridgeport continues

The lawsuit filed by Crossing Rivers Health of Prairie du Chien against Crawford County and the town of Bridgeport regarding a growing “pond” by the hospital is continuing. On Aug. 15, Grant County Circuit Court Judge Craig Day granted an extension to the hospital until Sept. 16 to file responses to briefs. Day is the judge in the case because Crawford County is one of defendants.

FT. Crawford Museum Fall Bus Tour

The 17th Annual Bus Trip to Minneapolis/St. Paul is planned for Oct. 16-18. This bus tour was organized in 2002 by Maury Oehler. It was his goal to help support the Prairie du Chien Historical Society in its efforts to preserve local history. The hospital building of the 2nd Ft. Crawford and the Museum of Prairie du Chien are owned and operated by the society. Since 2002 this three-day- two-night bus trip has generated several thousand dollars to keep the museum a viable and valuable city treasure. In 2016 Maury passed the reigns of this fundraiser to Janet Finn. With the help of Maury, she has been able to plan three successful trips and has planned another for 2019. These trips have always included historical, cultural, theatrical and mystery venues. This year’s venues include three plays: Mamma Mia! at the Chanhassen Theater, Gloria-A Life at the History Theater and A New Bermuda Triangle at a small theater called Day Trippers; two Historical sites — St.

The Smoke Screen Program was held at Prairie du Chien High School Aug. 20. The program provided an opportunity for adults and parents to learn about e-cigarettes and social media trends among the youth. 

“The notion that only certain types of kids are vaping is no longer the case, all kinds of kids are doing it these days,” said Sonya Lenzendorf, Crawford County Public Health educator.

While smoking rates among teenagers have gone down in the past few years, vaping rates have gone up significantly Lenzendorf noted.

“The long-term effects of vaping are still not known at this time, as these devices are still relatively new,” she said.

Rep. Ron Kind (D-WI) held a town hall meeting Aug. 21 at the Crawford County Administration Building in Prairie du Chien.

Rep. Kind opened the meeting by discussing his priorities for the 116th Congress which included lowering healthcare costs for Wisconsin seniors, families and individuals, resolving the crisis facing Wisconsin’s family farmers, rebuilding Wisconsin’s aging infrastructure, reauthorizing the Higher Education Act and recommitting to a strong sense of fiscal responsibility answered a variety of questions from local citizens that ranged from immigration, conservation, gun control, global warming, impeaching President Trump and healthcare.

Peoples State Bank student and intern programs may lead to future job opportunities

Every summer, Peoples State Bank hires high school students and has an intern program for college students to help give real-world experience to local youth. 

Many of these students and interns have turned into full-time employees. Currently around 10-15 former students and interns are working at the bank full-time, including their current CFO and SVP of Bank Operations Brennen Clark.

“We’ve employed high school students for a long time now, but we started the college internship program in 2016,” said Aphton Check, Peoples State Bank marketing manager. “Most students start as a teller, but eventually most also gain experience with other departments, such as loan officers, processing, credit finance and IT,” she added.

This summer, Peoples State Bank had three students work as interns; McKenna Keeney, Zach Mara and Erin Hemmer.

Public Health: More than just shots- Child passenger safety checks and lead poison testing

This is a series about the Crawford County Health Department and the array of services they provide.

Child Passenger Safety Checks

Road injuries are the leading cause of unintentional deaths to children in the United States. When installed and used correctly child safety seats decrease the risk of fatal injury by 71 percent among infants, 54 percent among toddlers and 45 percent among children ages 4 - 8. 

Crawford County Public Health offers free Car Seat Checks. “An estimated 59 percent of car seats and 20 percent of booster seats are installed or used improperly.  Our hope is to help parents and caregivers learn how to properly install their car seats and feel confident in doing it themselves in the future,” said Sonya Lenzendorf, Crawford County Public Health educator.
