Ruth A. Mundt

Ruth A. Mundt, 79, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Saturday, May 25, 2019, at Crossing Rivers Health Care. 

She was born Feb 13, 1940, in Richland County, the daughter of Clifford and Leona (Chitwood) Fry. 

Ruth graduated from the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing and later received her Bachelor’s of Nursing from the University of Dubuque. She married Kelly Mundt on Dec 5, 1964, in Richland Center. 

Kelly preceded her in death on June 1, 2010.

Gerald L. 'Jerry' Falls

Gerald L. “Jerry” Falls, 85, of Prairie du Chien passed away Thursday, May 23, 2019 at the Gundersen Health System in LaCrosse. 

He was born Nov 30, 1933 in Fountain City, WI the son of Harvey and Pearl (Hertzfeldt) Falls. 

He married Delores Evenson on Aug. 18, 1957. He served in the US Air Force. He worked as a telephone lineman for General Telephone for over 30 years. Jerry also worked at Wonder Wash in Prairie du Chien after his retirement from GTE. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish and garden. He was a longtime member of the Eagles Club Aerie 1502 in Prairie du Chien.

William K. 'Bill' Wild

William K. “Bill” Wild, 73, of McGregor passed away Thursday, May 23, 2019, at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien.  

He was born April 26, 1946, in Waukon, Iowa, the son of William and Evelyn (Regan) Wild.

Bill served in the US Army in Vietnam as a sharpshooter in the infantry.  He was decorated for valor and received the Purple Heart for injuries he sustained there.  

Bill worked at Wyalusing Academy in Prairie du Chien for over 30 years as a social worker.  

He is survived by his brothers Mel (Maureen) of McGregor, Iowa, and Maurice (Marie) of Elmira, N.Y., his sister Eileen (Carl) Olofson of Lake Geneva.

Helen C. White

Helen C. White, 92, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Friday, May 24, 2019 at the Great River Care Center in McGregor, Iowa. 

She was born March 5, 1927 in Winchester, KY the daughter of Clay and Nancy (Parks ) Ingram. 

She married Paul White on April 12, 1958 in Chicago, IL. Helen worked as an inspector for Motorola in Chicago. She was a talented baker and was renowned for her wedding cakes in the Prairie du Chien area. Helen loved her home State of Kentucky, playing bingo and the Cubs. She was an active member of the Eagles Club Aerie 1502 in Prairie du Chien.

Free Kids in the Garden program to begin June 12


Kids who participate in the free activities through Kids in the Garden will get their hands dirty planting flowers and vegetables and learning about bugs and other creatures. They will also get to taste some of the goodies from the garden. (Submitted photo)

Kids love to get their hands dirty and learn about plants that grow as well as bugs, birds and other creatures found in nature. A free summer program in Prairie du Chien called Kids in the Garden provides fun educational opportunities in the garden every second and fourth Wednesday, June 12-Aug. 7.

PDC offering storm shelters to the public

With the summer storm season felt strongly around the area last Friday, Prairie du Chien Police Chief Kyle Teynor wants all citizens to be aware of the storm shelter options in town. 

There are three options for Prairie du Chien residents to take shelter in: the library storm shelter, Hoffman Hall and the county emergency government offices (sheriff's department/dispatch). 

The emergency government offices is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Hoffman Hall and the library shelters would be opened by on-duty police officers when a tornado warning is put into effect.

Bagley slasher: 77 tires damaged

On May 28, at around 12:30 a.m., the Grant County Sheriff’s Office started to receive multiple reports of a subject slashing vehicle tires in the village of Bagley. Witnesses were able to observe Joseph Neeley, 29, of Bagley, slashing multiple vehicle’s tires. They attempted to stop Neeley, but he was able to run across the railroad tracks and attempted to hide next to the BNSF railroad tracks. 

Deputies located Neeley and were able to take him into custody and transported him to the Grant County Jail. Upon the initial investigation, it was found that 77 separate tires had been damaged. Neeley was booked into the jail on the 77 counts of criminal damage to property and held on a $200 bond for each count. Neeley will also be cited for trespass to railroad property.

7-year-old sells 2,312 boxes of Girl Scout cookies

A goal-seeking first grade Girl Scout from Prairie du Chien sold 2,312 boxes of the famous cookies this year—enough to win herself a trip to Disney World. 

Natilie Mink, a second-year Daisy, spent six consecutive weekends, from Feb. 9 through March 19, selling local favorites Thin Mints, Caramel deLites (Samoas), Peanut Butter Patties (Tagalongs) S’mores and other flavors of the beloved cookies. To achieve the magical two-person vacation, one Girl Scout needed to sell at least 2,019 boxes in 2019. By setting mini goals along the way, Natilie sold that many, plus several hundred more, mainly sitting at a stand graciously allowed inside Nelson True Value in Prairie du Chien.

Ritchie, Teynor on to State Track

The Blackhawk track and field athletes that made it to the East Troy Sectional and got themselves ready for the day with a nice quiet drive. 

Kori Jaynes got things rolling with a nice 100m dash and just missed her career PR by 1/10th of a second, finishing the season in 10th place. Faith Dillman was up next in the 100 High Hurdles and finished the day in 12th place with a 17.94. Ben Teynor was up next in the 110 High Hurdles. Ben hit a 15.80 and qualified for the finals. Ben then hit a career PR - 15.42 in the finals and just missed out on going to state by 1/100th of a second, finishing in 6th place.

The Wauzeka-Steuben softball team won 6-5 over visiting and fourth-seeded De Soto Thursday, May 23 in regional softball action.

Top-seeded Wauzeka-Steuben improved their overall record to 21-0 and advanced to the sectional semifinal against second-seeded Highland at Wauzeka on May 28 beginning at 4:30 p.m.

The winning pitcher was Tabitha Check. She gave up 5 runs on 7 hits, while fanning 6 and walking 4.
