Time running out to apply for PdC Citizens Academy

Take an inside look at the work Prairie du Chien police officers do by signing up for the fifth annual Citizens Academy, a free 10-week, interactive course that presents the gamut of duties local law enforcement manage in their line of work. But time is running out to apply, as the weekly activities begin March 7. Each class meets at the police department, from 6 to 9 p.m., and runs through May 9.

The deadline for Citizens Academy applications is Tuesday, March 5, at 5 p.m. Go online to prairieduchien.info (toggle down under “Departments” and click on “Police Department,” then scroll down to “2019 Citizens Academy Application”) to access and print a form to be turned in at city hall or the Crawford County Law Enforcement Center dispatch location. Paper forms may also be obtained at city hall and dispatch.

Prairie du Chien came from behind to defeat visiting Lodi 53-43 in a WIAA Division 3 Regional semifinal boys basketball game Friday night. 

A big and physical Lodi team limited Prairie to just one shot on most trips down the floor in the first half to take a 22-15 halftime lead.

Momo Challenge sparks fear, reminder for social media supervision

Prairie du Chien Public Schools sent out a parent tech alert Feb. 28, in response to the recent mania called the Momo Challenge, also known as the “suicide killer game,” that is popping up on social media sites accessible by children of any age.  

The Momo Challenge “is primarily communicated through Facebook’s WhatsApp (free messaging application), but can show up in other social media sites hidden within animated videos on YouTube and more,” according to the alert provided by High School Principal Andy Banasik. According to concerned Facebook posts, the imagery and language from a terrifying doll with long hair and bulging eyes are supposedly being placed into cartoons and toy review videos.

Top seeded Black Hawk, an undefeated powerhouse this season, defeated second seeded River Ridge 58-27 in a WIAA Division 5 Sectional semifinal in Mineral Point in girls basketball Thursday night. 

River Ridge ended a very good season with a 21-3 overall record and a 10-0 mark in the Six Rivers West. The Lady Timberwolves were the regional champions and the undefeated outright conference champions.

Platteville defeats Prairie girls

Second seeded Platteville defeated top seeded Prairie du Chien 48-39 in a WIAA Division 3 Sectional semifinal at Madison Edgewood Thursday night. 

The Lady Blackhawks’ season came to an end, but it was a very good season as Prairie du Chien won the outright conference championship with a 9-1 record over Platteville, who had an 8-2 mark. Prairie du Chien was also regional champions and they finished the season at 20-2.

Crawford County winter maintenance costs up 47 percent for salt and sand

This winter has been quite a bit more costly than last year in terms of snow removal efforts by Crawford County.

Highway Commissioner Dennis Pelock said there are 134 miles of county roadways and 190 miles of state highways within the county.

Pauline J. DuCharme

Pauline J. DuCharme, 63, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2019, at her home.  

She was born Sept. 21, 1955, in Prairie du Chien, the daughter of Joseph and Norma (Jacobs) Graf. Pauline grew up on the family farm near Bagley and was a graduate of West Grant High School. She worked as a production operator for 3M Company in Prairie du Chien for 34 years until her retirement.  

Pauline is survived by her son Brad “Bud” (Alexandria), of Prairie du Chien; and her brother, Paul (Connie) Graf, of Bagley. She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother.

According to Pauline’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. The Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien is assisting the family.

Paul Fiddler

Paul Fiddler, 97, of McGregor, Iowa, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2019, at Prairie Maison under hospice care in Prairie du Chien. 

He was the son of Michael and Jennie (Albright) Fiddler. Paul was baptized and confirmed Catholic. He attended school in Blue Earth, Minnesota.

Traffic stop results in drug bust

On Feb. 21, at 8:15 p.m., a deputy with the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office initiated a traffic stop on a 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix for a speeding violation on Pine Street at the intersection of US Highway 61 in the village of Soldiers Grove. 

The driver was identified as Jesse M. Nash, 32, and the passenger was identified as Shauna L. Erickson, 21, both of Soldiers Grove.

Man arrested after driving into snowbank

On Feb. 22, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a vehicle parked, with its driver slumped over the steering wheel, alongside Highway 60 near Old Highway 60 in the township of Bridgeport. 

Moments later, the reporting party stated the suspect vehicle began driving again and they saw the vehicle proceed through the intersection of Highway 18 and Upper Bridgeport Road. The suspect vehicle drove through the intersection, through a road sign and several yards into a large snow bank. The vehicle came to rest buried in the snowbank with heavy front-end damage.
