Crash causes power outage in part of Eastman

On Sunday, Jan. 27, at 7:43 p.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a one-vehicle traffic crash on S. Water Street in the village of Eastman.

Dylan M. Krachey-Yahn, 21, Eastman, was operating a 2000 Ford F 250 southbound on S. Water Street from Sheridan Road when he lost control of his truck and struck a utility pole.

Come give your input about PdC rental needs

All current and potential renters as well as first-time or single-family homebuyers in the Prairie du Chien area are urged to attend a Renters Forum on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at 5:30 p.m., in the city hall community room. By simply registering at the 60-90-minute session, people will have their names put into a drawing for $50 cash. 

The forum goal is for regional developers to identify renter needs regarding how tenant offerings can be improved and fulfilled throughout the area.

Coldest air in decades


Prairie du Chien was pretty quiet Tuesday and Wednesday, with a weather warning in effect for record-breaking, dangerous cold through Thursday, Jan. 31, at noon. But Morgan Stifel was out mid-afternoon Tuesday, braving -2oF degree temperatures and -20oF wind chills, as he walked to his home on Marquette Road. Stifel said he moved here in the 1990s and has never seen the air quite so raw as it’s been this week. State of emergency declared, closures are widespread

Wisconsin is in a state of emergency, as declared by Gov. Tony Evers Monday, in response to ongoing dangerous wind chills predicted to reach 45 to 60 degrees below zero Tuesday through Thursday. 

Warming centers are available in Crawford County upon request, according to the emergency management and public health offices. The two entities team up to manage the centers upon request for as many as 24 hours a day if necessary. Emergency Management Director Jim Hackett said, to request a warming center Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., contact the public health department at 326-0229. Outside of normal business hours, requests should be made by contacting the county communications center at 326-8414.

Prairie du Chien High School wrestling is celebrating its 50th anniversary this season, having begun during the 1969-1970 school year after interest in the sport grew over the previous few years. The program has had several highlights over the years and is continuing to build a tradition of success.

River Ridge Dance Team advances to state

On Saturday, Jan. 25, the River Ridge Dance Team attended the Southern Regional Dance competition held by WACPC in Watertown, Wis. 

The past week was hard to get practice in with the weather and having to cancel practices, and with games being postponed. The team was able to practice a couple times during the week and picked up an extra performance during an eighth-grade basketball game so that they could get one more performance in before competing.

On Saturday, Jan. 26, the PDC matmen traveled to Hustisford for the 34th Annual Hustisford Invitational. 

This invite has 14 teams competing. The Blackhawks would have a great tournament, securing 34 individual wins against 11 losses, and crowning six champions. PDC, as a team, scored 263.5 points. Whitewater finished second with 187 points and Johnson Creek third with 157 points. The grapplers placed as follows:

PdC wrestlers fall to Lancaster


Junior Jerrod Osterkamp works a front headlock from his feet. Osterkamp would score a reversal with seconds left for a 2-1 victory.

Senior Reid Koenig applies heavy pressure on his ride. Koenig would win with an 8-2 decision.

 

Lancaster High School was the host for a winner take all dual on Friday, Jan. 25. In a battle to determine who would be crowned outright SWC Champs, two highly ranked teams would lock horns. Lancaster came into the match with a 13-0 overall record and a ranking of #5 in D3. PDC came into the dual with a 15-1 overall record and a ranking of #6 in D2. Something had to give.

Ronald R. Mullikin

Ronald R. Mullikin, 87, of Wauzeka, passed away on Friday, Jan. 18, 2019, at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, surrounded by his family.  

He was born on Sept. 1, 1931, in Bell Center, the son of Gilbert and Gladys (Peak) Mullikin. He was an Army, Korean Conflict Veteran.  

He is survived by three sons and a daughter, Steve Mullikin of Boscobel, Bryan Mullikin of Gays Mills, Terry Mullikin (fiancée Kellie Ronnfeldt) of Boscobel, and Lori Anderson of McGregor, Iowa; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three brothers,Virgil (Marion) Mullikin of Waldo, Gary Mullikin of Waukesha and Kenneth Mullikin of Waukesha.

Marlys Marie Mason

Marlys Marie Mason passed away peacefully Sunday, Jan. 20, 2019, at the age of 87, at Noel Manor in Verona. 

She was born in Lone Elm, Kan., on Feb. 2, 1931, the daughter of Ralph Bynum and Frances Wilma Lewis. 

She attended the University of Kansas and obtained her nursing degree. After meeting her husband, James Mason, in San Diego, they returned to Wisconsin to settle in Bagley. Marlys worked at several hospitals in the area, retiring as director of nursing at the Lancaster Nursing Home. In her free time, she and Jim enjoyed time spent on their houseboat while on the Mississippi River and also spent their winters in Florence, Ariz.

Deanna Jean Matlock

Deanna Jean Matlock, 72, of Eastman, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2019, at her home in Eastman. 

She was born Dec. 3, 1946, to Leroy and Freda (Stanford) Boyles in Salem, Ill. 

Deanna was united in marriage with Charles Wesley Matlock on Dec. 17, 1981. in Ottawa, Ill. To this union, Charlie brought his children, Kent, Kim, Roy, Charles Jr. and Opal. Deanna worked for Badgeaminit in Illinois, as a waitress at a truck stop in Illinois and, after moving to Wisconsin, she worked as a shift manager at McDonalds in Prairie du Chien. In her spare time, Deanna enjoyed doing puzzles, reading, sewing, growing houseplants, feeding the birds, gardening with Charlie and spending time with her family.
