Man dies in skid steer accident

On Saturday, Jan. 12, at 6:06 p.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a man versus skid steer accident on Fritsche Lane in the township of Eastman. It was reported that a man was smashed by the skid steer.

Blas E. Cuahutzihua, 45, Mexico, was operating a Mustang skid steer. Blas had the hydraulic arms of the skid steer raised in the air. Blas exited the cab and was presumed to be attempting to clean the foot control pedals. Blas did not engage the safety locks that hold the hydraulic arms in place. While clearing the foot controls, the hydraulic arms were engaged and closed on Blas. Blas was pinned between the cab and the arms of the skid steer. A co-worker heard Blas and came to his aid.

Tiller is new PdC Flotilla commander

Longtime Prairie du Chien businesswoman, Sue Tiller, has been selected to lead the Prairie du Chien Flotilla, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Commander Tiller, relieved Commander Art Sullivan as the Prairie du Chien Flotilla Commander on Jan. 1.

Sue is a lifelong resident of Prairie du Chien. She graduated high school in 1971 from Our Lady of Good Counsel Academy in Mankato, Minn.  

Then, in 1976, from the University of Wisconsin–Madison with a degree in preschool, kindergarten and child development. While at UW, the Army ROTC program was opened to women and Sue became the first woman to graduate from that program. After graduation, Sue joined the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant and, after serving 20 years in military intelligence, she retired with the rank of major.

Reformers Unanimous welcomes anyone fighting addiction, unhealthy habits

For anyone battling addiction to drugs, alcohol, gambling, cutting, eating disorders, pornography, anger or otherwise, Reformers Unanimous offers weekly meetings on the north end of Prairie du Chien.

Reformers Unanimous is a little-known yet highly successful  addiction program available in Prairie du Chien to anyone, age 16 and older, struggling with substance dependence and stubborn habits of any nature. It’s free every Friday at 7 p.m., for about two hours, at the Bible Baptist Church north building (515 Cliffhaven Rd.), which is handicap accessible.

Area residents of any faith looking to “Break the Chains of Addiction” to drugs, alcohol, gambling, cutting, eating disorders, pornography, anger or otherwise are welcome. Attendees can join at any stage in their recovery process as well. Family members and friends are encouraged to accompany loved ones if they wish.

Catholic Charities closing Prairie du Chien branch

Catholic Charities local office will close by Jan. 23.

Catholic Charities will permanently close its branch office at 104 E. Blackhawk Ave. in Prairie du Chien on Jan. 23, according to a news release issued this week by the organization.

While this office was an outreach location for all Catholic Charities programs, it employed one full-time and two part-time employees, the release said. Local services were provided for domestic abuse, representative payee, adoption, post-adoption resources, birth parent support, immigration and St. Lawrence Community services such as financial education and assistance with basic human needs.

PdC wrestlers win SPASH Duals

Prairie du Chien freshman 106-pounder Nick Mara scores near fall points just before pinning his Sussex Hamilton opponent.

 

On Saturday, Jan. 12, the PDC grapplers traveled to Stevens Point for the SPASH Duals. These duals are made up of two, five-team pools. A team wrestles all teams in their pool to determine their placement match. A year ago, PDC was crowned champs, so they were looking for the repeat. 

PDC would win their pool by the following: PDC 53 - DC Everest 21, PDC 77 - SPASH JV 6, PDC 38 - Oconto Falls 36, PDC 78 - Sussex Hamilton 0.

New ag agent in Crawford County

There is a new agriculture agent at Crawford County’s University of Wisconsin Extension. Adam Hady began his duties on Jan. 1 and will be in Crawford County 50 percent of the time and in Richland County 50 percent.

Joanne Jean Nagel

Joanne Jean Nagel, 75, of Eastman, passed away Monday, Jan. 7, 2019, at the Bland-Bekkedahl Hospice Center in Viroqua after a courageous battle with cancer. 

She was born March 23, 1943, at her grandparents’ home in Seneca, to Louis and Lucille (Sutton) Fradette. Joanne grew up in and spent the majority of her life in the Seneca area, graduating Seneca High School in 1961. In 1963, Joanne married Everette Reynolds and had two sons, Jim and Roger.

Robert J. 'Bob' McCarthy

Robert J. “Bob” McCarthy, 92, of Eastman, died on Sunday, Jan. 13, at the Prairie Maison care facility in Prairie du Chien. 

He was born June 22, 1926, in Wauzeka, the son of John and Esther (Lathrop) McCarthy. He married Lorraine Polodna on June 6, 1950; they lived in the Eastman area the rest of their lives. Lorraine preceded him in death on Jan. 28, 1999. Bob managed the Prairie City Bank-Eastman Station for 36 years and was the past president of the Crawford County Banker’s Association. He served as Eastman village treasurer, Eastman water superintendent and a volunteer fireman, each for over a half century. Bob served as a treasurer of 13 different organizations at one time and enjoyed driving a school bus for the Prairie du Chien School District for over 17 years. He was an active member of St. Wenceslaus Parish in Eastman, serving as a Eucharistic minister and usher.

Leroy F. Wood

Leroy F. Wood, 79, of Prairie du Chien and formerly of Olin, Iowa, passed away Thursday, Jan. 10, 2019, surrounded by his family at his home.  

He was born Sept. 22, 1939, in Olin, the son of Emery and Hazel Wood. 

Leroy served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War as a ship’s engineer. He later worked as an engineer for the Iowa State Penitentiary at Anamosa, retiring after 28 years.  Leroy was a member of the American Legion and the VFW.

William R. 'Bill' Specht

William R. “Bill” Specht, 96, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Sunday, Jan. 13, at the Prairie Maison Care Center.  

He was born March 28, 1922, in Dodgeville, the son of Charles and Sarah (Reese) Specht.  

He married Mary Dickert on Nov. 26, 1942, in Madison.  She preceded him in death on April 20, 2008.  Bill owned and operated Specht’s IGA in Prairie du Chien for many years.  He was a founding member of the Prairie du Chien Country Club and was an avid Wisconsin Badger fan.  

He is survived by his daughters, Barb (Stan) Toberman and Peg (Kurt) Smith; a son Jim (Mary Beth) Specht, all of Prairie du Chien; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
