Internet co-op to build fiber infrastructure for rural Crawford County

Recently-incorporated Crawford County Communications Cooperative (3C Co-op) intends to build the fiber optic infrastructure to provide Fiber To The Home (FTTH) gigabit service for the under-served rural residents of Crawford County. 

This will provide symmetrical gigabit service, with upload and download speeds up to 1,000 Mbps (megabits/second), to all of the 3,605 locations that have no broadband access, requiring over 1,000 miles of fiber optic cable to be buried.

On Monday, Nov. 19, with the assistance of Andre Boening, Wisconsin Field Rep for the Rural Utility Service Telecommunications Program, the board of 3C Co-op met with cooperative development specialists from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utility Service (RUS) and the University of Wisconsin’s Cooperative Center.

Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign a Christmas tradition

The Prairie du Chien seventh grade girls basketball team spent time ringing bells last November for the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign.

In the wake of the flooding that hit Crawford County in August, Tec McLimans, of Fennimore, held a couple lemonade stands, raising over $2,000 for supplies that he and his family worked with the Salvation Army to donate to flood victims.

Crawford County Salvation Army Coordinator Jen Kapinus has noticed fewer homeless families coming into her office for assistance, inside the Prairie du Chien United Methodist Church, this past year. Though that may seem encouraging, it doesn’t mean needy individuals are suddenly flourishing.

“Last year, we were overwhelmed with [homelessness]. This year, it’s been rent and utilities to stay in homes—more homeless prevention,” she reasoned. “Really, there’s no organization that helps with first month’s rent and deposit. People just don’t have the means to pay $800 to $1,000 to get started.”

It was a scrappy game between host River Ridge and Prairie du Chien Tuesday night.

 

Prairie du Chien defeated host River Ridge 55-41 in nonconference girls basketball action Tuesday night. 

The Lady Blackhawks built a 24-18 halftime lead over the Lady Timberwolves.

Macey Banasik netted 11 points to pace Prairie du Chien. Lily Krahn pumped in 10. Ella Hager scored 9. Gabby Ritchie and Makenzie Knapp each had 7. Abby Feye scored 5 and Allison Allbee had 4.

Two sides spar over book during PdC school board meeting

The book "The 57 Bus" caused some debate at the special Prairie du Chien School Board meeting Monday night.

Lorraine Mainor

Lorraine Mainor, 81, of Viroqua, died Monday, July 23. 

She was born to Arthur and Gladys (West) Barrette, in Bloomington, on July 15, 1937. Lorraine attended St. Mary’s School in Prairie du Chien.

She was united in marriage with Wilbur Ray Mainor. They later divorced. She enjoyed painting, reading and tending to her indoor plants. Lorraine was a master of all trade, including being a seamstress and upholstering furniture.

Lorraine is survived by her children, Deanna (Cecil) Martin of Bagley, Douglas (Jackie) Mainor of New Port Richey, Fla., and Judy Perry of Ancorage, Alaska; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and her siblings, Gary Barrette, Sylvester Barrette, Mark Barrette and Madonna Toberman.

William Clifford 'Bill' Larsen

William Clifford “Bill” Larsen passed away Nov. 23, 2018. 

He was born Oct. 13, 1955, in Prairie du Chien. He was happily raised on two farms, first by Seneca (overlooking the Mississippi) and then between Steuben and Wauzeka. He graduated from Wauzeka-Steuben schools in 1973 and attended SWTC for farm management. He fell in love and married Rosanna Wier in 1988. Rosanna and Bill made their home in Wauzeka. They had two daughters Anna and April. Bill worked at a number of manufacturers in Prairie du Chien where he always had a smile and a ready wit. Bill enjoyed his family and pets and he was a expert on TV westerns. Whenever asked how things were, his answer was always “pretty good, pretty good.”

Birdie M. Meng

Birdie M. Meng, 98, of Bagley, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 21, at the Grant Regional Care Center in Lancaster.

She was born March 3, 1920, in Wyalusing Township, the daughter of Verdie and Amelia (Cathman) Clark.  She married Edward Meng on Feb. 24, 1940, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Dubuque, Iowa. Together, they farmed most of their lives in the Bagley area. Birdie was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Bagley, The Royal Neighbors of America and the American Legion Auxiliary.  

She is survived by her sons, LaVern (Nancy) and Dale (Nancy Reiss), both of Jefferson, and Robert, of Bagley; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and her sister-in-law, Myrna Clark, of Lancaster.

Maurice L. Parkins

Maurice L. Parkins, 83, of Glen Haven, passed away peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by his loving family, on Saturday, Nov 24, at Orchard Manor Nursing Home, rural Lancaster. 

He was born on Dec. 9, 1934, at the family farm in Beetown Township, the son of Lloyd and Iva (Myers) Parkins.

Vehicle heavily damaged in rollover

On Saturday, Nov. 17, at 5:06 a.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a rollover accident in Freeman Township, on Buck Creek Road approximately one-tenth of a mile east Highway 35.

An eastbound 2015 Ford pickup owned and operated by 32-year-old Timothy S. Klein of Menasa, left the road and overturned.

Klein refused medical treatment. 

The vehicle had heavy damage. Weather conditions contributed to the accident.

PdC woman charged with meth possession

A 36-year-old Prairie du Chien woman has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of possession of methamphetamine. 

Paula Quakenbush faces up to a $10,000 fine and 3.5 years in prison if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint, Prairie du Chien police officers stopped a vehicle which had a defective and loud exhaust. The driver, Quakenbush, had bloodshot and dilated eyes, the complaint said. She agreed to a search of her vehicle.

A small, metal tin containing meth was found in the search.
