Fire destroys home on Prairie Street

A vacation home at 820 N. Prairie St., in Prairie du Chien, caught fire early Tuesday morning and is a total loss, according to Fire Chief Jeff Boughton. Yet, nobody was home when it happened, so there were no injuries and no loss of life. The adjacent homes were undamaged.

“It was fully engulfed when we got there,” he stated.

The call came in to the Prairie du Chien Fire Department about 12:30 a.m. Ablaze was an old trailer house with two garage additions, owned by a couple from Chicago. Five Prairie du Chien fire trucks were dispatched, and the Bridgeport and Rural Prairie du Chien Fire Department was called in for mutual aid. They sent three trucks to the scene, Boughton said.

PdC Fire Prevention Program

B.A. Kennedy Elementary School student Korrie Johnson helped lead a 3-year-old kindergarten 9-1-1 chant, with assistance from firefighter Joe Johnson. This was just one of several activities the Prairie du Chien Fire Department presented to the students at BAK, Bluff View and Prairie Catholic schools Oct. 11 during a Fire Prevention Week. (Photos by Correne Martin)

Braxton Bahls was so excited to meet the department’s mascot, Fire Pup, that he just couldn’t go take a seat for the program.

Eva Pitzer, in her fire pup hat, listened intently to the messages the Prairie du Chien Fire Department had for her about fire prevention and fire safety.

Lieutenant Ben Pintz gives B.A. Kennedy students high fives after demonstrating how he gets into his gear before a fire call.

Some of the 3K students at B.A. Kennedy, along with fireman Derek Eastman, practice a “Stop, Drop and Roll” drill, as other members of the department look on.
