Jeanette C. Bolin

Jeanette C. Bolin, 68, of Prairie du Chien, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, May 22, at her home. 

She was born Aug. 26, 1949, in Prairie du Chien, the daughter of Joseph and Goldie (Stuckey) LeGrand. Jeanette and her siblings would later spend a majority of their early years with Goldie and their stepfather Donald Sherrick. She married Karlan Bolin on June 30, 1995. Jeanette worked as an underwriter for several different mortgage companies. Karl preceded her in death on Aug. 31, 2011.

Marcus A. Morarend

Marcus A. Morarend, 71, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 23, 2018, at his home in Bagley. 

He was the youngest of four children born to Juanita (Blume) and Marvin Morarend, in Guttenberg, Iowa. The family later moved to Gran Grae, where Marcus attended the local schoolhouse. He spent his days working the family farm, fishing, hunting and venturing through the woods. His love of the outdoors became part of him and he shared that love with many family and friends throughout his life. His love of the outdoors also led him to be part of the founding group whom started the local Rendezvous.

Sunny and patriotic day for Fourth of July Parade in Bagley

This cute pooch is adorned in a red, white and blue lei on a beach-themed float Saturday during the Bagley Fourth of July Celebration Parade.

A nice line-up of antique tractors was a crowd favorite along the parade route.

Rubby Ducky, you’re the one—on this bubbly and squeaky clean float.

Bagley may not have many swimmin’ pools or movie stars, but the Bagley Hillbillies are just as down home country as their more famous Beverly Hills brethren. Y’all come back now, hear.

Tiny houses are becoming all the rage, and this neat little unit looks quite homey and inviting.

RABAS saves Texan dogs on the verge of euthanization

As dogs have been filed into Houston shelters, approximately 60 to 80 being surrendered each day, euthanization lists have grown at an alarming rate due to lack of space for the many sweet abandoned dogs. Prairie du Chien’s Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter (RABAS), partnering with Lola’s Lucky Day based in Madison, is protecting the rights of these dogs by transporting them to the area to help them find “fur-ever” homes.

“No day is ever the same,” Laurie Wild, radio host of almost seven years at Great Country Q94 WQPC Prairie du Chien, stated about the wonders of her position. Wild hosts her own afternoon show, which plays throughout the area from  2 to 7 p.m. on Q94, while also being the radio station’s marketing consultant. 

Her days begin with sales work, connecting with clients while writing orders. During her mornings, she also attempts to figure out what she would like to talk about during the show later that day. She searches on Twitter country music related accounts for often light-hearted topics.

Stanley J. Hamann

Stanley J. Hamann, 96, a lifelong resident of Prairie du Chien, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 30, at Prairie Maison. 

Stan served overseas in the U.S. Army during WWII and later returned to become a prominent businessman in Prairie du Chien, operating and later owning Hamann’s Variety Store for 40 years.  In his spare time, he was an avid hunter and fisherman spending countless hours pursuing these pastimes on the Mississippi River.

He is survived by his son Rick (Patty), of Prairie du Chien; his daughter Jan (George) Collins, of Somers, Conn.; his sister Priscilla (Jimmy) Englebright, of Homosassa, Fla.

Stump Dodger Bash this weekend

The Stump Dodger Bash, taking place in Gays Mills Friday, July 6-7, will host artists Smoking Gun Showdown, Brecken Miles, High Mileage, CJ Solar, Terra Bella, Heidi Raye, Canaan Cox, Jason Pritchett and Craig Wayne Boyd 

Smoking Gun Showdown, founded in Prairie du Chien, is a country band fronted by female singers April Bouzek and Leigh Vorwald preparing to take over the music world. They are proud to perform both covers and originals. The band has taken part in many large music competitions in the past. With the ladies, the musicians David Borys, Jeff Goettel, Jeff Gaunitz and Jeff Hanson rock the stage.

Blake’s Prairie Fair July 12-15

Three area high schoolers are competing to become the king and queen of the 2018 Blake’s Prairie Jr. Fair, which will be held at the fairgrounds in Bloomington July 12-15.

Queen candidate Katelyn Quick, daughter of Roy and Mickey Quick, of Bagley, is sponsored by the River Ridge FFA. Katelyn has been an active member of the FFA for four years, was her FFA chapter’s reporter and is the current vice-president. She has served on the Safety Day committee, livestock contest, greenhouse and banquet committee. She placed first at the Wisconsin soils contest in 2016 and also received the Star Chapter Award that same year. Katelyn has been awarded the Greenhand Award and the Chapter Degree. She volunteers at the Blake’s Prairie Jr. Fair by taking tickets, cleaning up the fairgrounds, parking cars and helping with the chicken barbecue.

Prairie du Chien American Legion baseball to hold fish fry fundraiser

The Prairie du Chien Grasshoppers pose with the championship trophy they won at the Onalaska Tournament recently. The team is ranked first in the state in Class A with a 10-2 record. Prairie du Chien Country Club to host open house, 60th Anniversary celebration July 4

Mayor Harry Lochner is shown on the first tee of the new Prairie du Chien Country Club as he had the honor of driving the first ball down the fairway in the grand opening ceremonies on Friday, July 4, 1958.
