The Crawford County June Dairy Month Kick-Off Banquet will be held on Monday, May 28, at the Eastman Salem United Methodist Fellowship Hall. The night will kick off at 7 p.m. with a cheese and cracker social, where attendees can meet the candidates for the Crawford County Dairy Royalty contests. A ham meatball dinner prepared by the Eastman United Methodist Church will follow at 7:30 p.m. 

The program will be filled with lots of delightful dairy tidbits such as the dairy promotion report, introduction of the Crawford County Dairy Breakfast host family, the presentation of the honorary dairy month chairpersons, and the Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin (formerly Wisconsin Milk Market Board) update.

Wauzeka-Steuben graduating class names top academic positions


Valedictorian Drew Zimmerman and Salutatorian Trent McCullick

Drew Zimmerman has been named the valedictorian and Trent McCullick the salutatorian of the Wauzeka-Steuben High School 2018 graduating class.

Drew is the son of Dean and Kim Zimmerman. He has been very active throughout his high school career while excelling academically. Drew has earned distinguished/high honors all four years, achieving an academic letter and four pins for his excellence in the classroom. He has been recognized as student of the month by the Wauzeka-Steuben faculty and staff. Furthermore, he has been involved in a number of extra-curricular activities over the past four years.

City of Prairie du Chien working on details of a pet park

The city of Prairie du Chien recently purchased Wisconsin Department of Transportation land at the Highway 18 Bypass and Lockwood Street intersection, before crossing the tracks to the city's wastewater treatment plant. The intent is to transform the land into a new pet park. 

The city is working with contractors of the current, local construction projects and with the contractor of the upcoming Michigan Street project to obtain fill needed to raise the pet park site.

Vehicle flips, enters flood waters

On Saturday, May 12, at 6:56 a.m., the Crawford County Dispatch Center was notified of a one-vehicle crash off of Highway 60, one mile east of Wauzeka.

Cody Tamling, 23, Wauzeka, was driving a 1997 Jeep Wrangler west on Highway 60 when he fell asleep. His vehicle went off the right side of the roadway, travelled along the ditch and hit a rock which caused the vehicle to overturn and come to a stop in the flood waters.

Tamling was wearing his seatbelt and was able to exit the vehicle. He escaped any injury.

The Jeep was a total loss and was towed from the scene.

Tamling was cited for inattentive driving.

Two-vehicle accident in Freeman Township

On Tuesday, May 15, at 9:10 a.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department was notified of a two-vehicle accident with no injuries or blockage at the intersection of Highway 35 and Highway 82 in Freeman Township.  

Wayne A. Hovden, 80, Ridgeway, Iowa, was stopped at the stop sign on Highway 82 waiting to make a left turn onto Highway 35 in a 2006 Buick sport utility vehicle. Albert J. Close, 67, Ferryville, was making a left turn onto Highway 82 from Highway 35 pulling a boat and trailer in a 2009 Chevy Silverado truck.  The Hovden vehicle pulled out, making the left turn and struck the side of the boat and trailer. 

Hovden and his passenger Patricia L. Hovden, 81, Ridgeway, Iowa, both claimed no injuries at the scene of the accident. Close also claimed no injuries at the scene.

Prairie du Chien rallied for 6 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to nip visiting Platteville 8-7 in an SWC baseball game Tuesday afternoon. 

Prairie du Chien took a 1-0 lead after the first inning.

Platteville scored a run in the top of the second to tie the game at 1-1.

People speak for and against Amundson at school board meeting

It was a standing room only crowd at the Prairie du Chien School Board meeting Monday night and extra chairs were brought in as numerous teachers, staff and students were on hand to show support for Aaron Amundson in anticipation of a possible vote about his position with the school district.
