Wauzeka Lions Club treasurer charged with theft

A 42-year-old Wauzeka woman was charged on April 23 in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of theft in a business setting of between $2,500 and $5,000.

Billie Mezera faces up to 3.5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine, if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint, Mezera was the treasurer of the Wauzeka Lions Club from July of 2016 to March of 2017. The president of the Lions Club was contacted by local businesses stating that the club had not paid its bills and owed them money. The president then contacted the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department and told investigators that those bills should have already been paid and that the club should have had more than enough funds to pay the bills.

Bev Pozega, Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter, was brought to tears in speaking about 10 years of hard work toward bringing the shelter to the region.

Like their fellow honorees, Tammy Otteson and Liz Bremmer felt they shared their awards with the family and friends who’ve helped raise funds for the past two and a half decades.

Crawford County Leadership Awards were given to six individuals and three organizations last Thursday evening, April 19, at a ceremony sponsored by the Crawford County Community Fund (CCCF), a component of the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin.

The mission of the CCCF is to create stronger communities by matching generosity with economic needs. Each year, the entity affords three endeavors: a grant cycle, the Crawford County Markets Care program and the leadership awards. It also supports community functions, like the Mississippi Valley Conservancy’s upcoming Bat Fest, the North Crawford play, Ferryville’s farmer’s market and much more. These are all thanks to a fund that’s reached almost $135,000 since inception in 2011.

Sir Savealot, the People’s State Bank mascot, and Kari Kronberg, debit card manager, shared a lesson about saving and earning money with Mrs. Oppreicht’s kindergarten class at B.A. Kennedy Friday, April 20. Kronberg showed the students different dollar bills and questioned them on what they could buy with them. (Photo by Correne Martin)

Learning to save and earn money are essential life skills that aren’t regular school curriculum pillars. But Mrs. Oppreicht’s kindergarten class at B.A. Kennedy Elementary School had the chance to read about those topics, listen to a local banking professional and meet Sir Savealot last week.

On Friday, April 20, Kari Kronberg, debit card manager at People’s State Bank in downtown Prairie du Chien, introduced the bank’s mascot to her daughter and 13 of her classmates in Mrs. Oppreicht’s room. They hugged and high-fived Sir Savealot and relished in the opportunity to take their class picture with him.

Eastman teen injured when his vehicle rolls

On Monday, April 23, at 5:45 a.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a one-vehicle traffic crash on Highway 27 near Gran Grae Road in the township of Prairie du Chien.

Ronald J. Atkinson, 17, Eastman, was operating a 2003 Saturn L200 southbound on Highway 27. Atkinson was attempting to negotiate a corner and lost control of his vehicle. The vehicle crossed the centerline and went to the left shoulder of the roadway while sliding sideways. The vehicle struck two construction barrels and then rolled multiple times down an embankment. The vehicle came to rest on its top in a field. Speed was a contributing factor in the crash.

ButterBurger’s new home slated to open first week of May

The Cathman family only wanted to reveal to the public a sneak peek of their Culver’s franchise’s remodeled entryway, order line and food window. The rest is up to imagination until it opens, hopefully, the first week in May. (Photos by Correne Martin)

The north-facing side of Culver’s in Prairie du Chien is still receiving brick and siding this week. Curb and gutter is nearly complete, and blacktop is expected to be laid next week.

When grilled about when Culver’s Restaurant will reopen in Prairie du Chien, owners Jason, Jen and Justin Cathman said they’re still shooting for the first week of May.

The last few weeks of unanticipated April snowstorms set back construction slightly. But the crew is now pressing its schedule toward perfection.

Driveway access from La Pointe Street has been moved further down the roadway, away from Marquette Road. The intent with that change was for safety reasons and to help with the flow of the restaurant’s drive-through, according to Jason.
